Telling the type of an offscreen character is not possible due to the requirement of said character being offscreen.
If anything, this should be an alias.

is there a difference between offscreen_character and unseen_character? is one for a character that's out of frame and one for a character who's totally obscured but would be in frame if they weren't? I feel like I've asked this (or even answered) this before and I can't remember...

it seems like offscreen_human is actually closer to faceless_human than offscreen_character

Offscreen_sex vs. obscured_sex is like that. The former is when the penetration is outside of the frame, and the latter is when the penetration is within frame but something is blocking the view. I'm not sure if any meaningful distinction is being made between offscreen_character and unseen_character though.

Edit: They do seem to be used the same, and there is already a strongly supported BUR to alias them together: https://e621.net/forum_topics/24770?page=1#forum_post_371423
