I’d rather use united_states_flag
The country’s name is not "america"

The standard practice is to use the demonym for flag names: german_flag, canadian_flag, japanese_flag, etc. So the logical choice for the flag of the United States is american_flag. In English, "America" and "American" by themselves almost always refer to the United States of America—which is the only country with the word "America" in its name. No one will be confused by this unless they are being willfully obtuse.
Are there other countries that start with "united states of"? If not then united_states_flag would be preferable. American_flag works fine imo, but people will keep asking for it to be changed to a more accurate term in the future.

The official name of Mexico is "Estados Unidos Mexicanos", which can be translated as "United Mexican States" or "United States of Mexico".
I don't see any reason to forgo the demonym standard just to satisfy some willfully obtuse people who refuse to acknowledge the accepted usage of "American" in English.
usa's flag can be referred as either 'american flag' and 'united states (u.s.) flag', taking from wikipedia at least. as well as the other (kind of vague) names like 'star and stripes' and 'old glory' flags but doesn't clearly refer the country's name.
imo, i would choose u.s. flag tag more because it alludes to the country much more. 'american flag' to refer usa's flag is a bit divisive, whether does it refer to other american-continent countries or native americans' nations, etc.

The thing is, in English "American" virtually never refers to anything but the United States. It's not ambiguous.
stars_and_stripes -american_flag Only reason I voted down. Do we include stuff like bras with USA flag theme as 'flags'? I was not sure. Last time I had to figure this out with a country was Canada's maple leaf which is considered separate from the flag, if I remember right. And yes, technically, it's USA flag, USSR flag, HMJ instead of Union Jack, blah blah. :D
I think it's funny that we have "red, white", and "blue" instead of "blue, red", and "white" which feels like an intentional snub at royalty because the blue is last.
