Topic: Tag consistency: bent/straight/extended arm and leg positions

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I noticed some inconsistencies with the tags describing arm and leg positions: bent, straight, and extended.

1. Bent

The leg tags seem OK:

  • The singular tag bent_leg is a separate tag from bent_legs. Both wiki pages contain text explaining this recommended usage ("For more than one leg in a bent position, use bent legs instead.").
  • The incorrect plural tag legs_bent is aliased to its correct equivalent bent_legs.
  • The incorrect singular tag leg_bent is not aliased to its correct equivalent bent_leg. (Though this isn't currently an issue because no images have that incorrect tag.)

But the arm tags are inconsistent:

  • The plural tag is arms_bent - so the naming format is the opposite way round to that of the legs!
  • What should be the correct plural tag bent_arms is incorrectly aliased to the singular tag bent_arm!

I also found topic #39332 suggesting the alias: bent_knees -> bent_legs. I agree that should be done. I also see there are also knee_bent and bent_knee tags with about 15-20 images each, and I think those should be aliased in the same way.

So I suggest the following changes to make these tags consistent:

remove alias bent_arms -> bent_arm
alias arms_bent -> bent_arms
alias arm_bent -> bent_arm
alias leg_bent -> bent_leg
alias bent_knees -> bent_legs
alias knees_bent -> bent_legs
alias knee_bent -> bent_leg

Are there any issues with that? If not, is it OK to submit that as a BUR?

2. Straight versus extended

For legs, the wiki says to use different tags depending on the stance: use "straight" if they're standing, "extended" if they're not being used to support their weight. So we have four tags:

For arms, I see that the most-used tags are extended_arm and extended_arms. That makes sense if they're meant to be used in the same way as the leg tags, since in most cases characters aren't supporting their weight on their arms.

But there are hundreds of images with straight_arm and straight_arms tags. Should those straight_arm* be kept for use on images where characters are walking_on_hands (as an equivalent of when "straight" is used for legs)? Or should they be aliased to extended_arm and extended_arms for simplicity?

remove alias bent_arms -> bent_arm

I just stumbled on this while trying to tag both bent_legs and bent_arms. The alias from bent_arms to bent_arm would make it wrong. It's also confusing that the words for the currently correct tags bent_legs and arms_bent are switched. I have to double check that I tag the right arm variant, or else I might end up getting the bent_arm alias.

I agree with all of the proposed changes from ChemistryNoisy!

Please fix :)

I also agree with Watsit, less tag clutter. I originally didn't tag bent_legs and arms_bent until I saw a picture with knee pulled up + planted leg. Both wiki pages have the tags bent_leg / bent_legs under related tags. That's when I thought maybe I should add this to all images as well. After giving it more thought, almost all pictures feature some kind of bent legs or bent arms. Do people really search for this? I decided to rather not tag bent legs and bent arms for now. (That was basically my thought process until this point.)
