The tag alias #65793 3d_background -> 3d_(artwork) is pending approval.

Reason: This tag seems superfluous, given it's not being used as intended and it's intention seems a bit questionable. The wiki says it shouldn't be applied to fully 3D posts, but as can be seen, it's applied to a significant number of such posts, making it little different.

It's intended to be used on posts that have a 3D background but 2D characters, however a more general "mixed 2D/3D" tag would be more appropriate for that as it could also handle backgrounds that are a mix of 2D/3D, characters that are a mix of 2D/3D, or 2D backgrounds with 3D character, without needing separate tags that are prone to misuse.

Given how much 3d_background is mistagged, and the need for a better alternative, aliasing to 3d_(artwork) is the best it can be aliased to without causing mistags (if the background is 3D, at least part of the image is 3D and thus 3d_(artwork) would apply).

I'd rather fix a tag than nuke it because people use it wrong.

It does seem like it's used right more often than not, I also think the concept fits perfectly with other existing tags like photo_background and screencap_background. People just don't view those as a problem because posts that are entirely photos or screencaps usually get deleted.

I think it would be better renamed since it's easy to misunderstand. Even if it were fixed now, it would accumulate mistags again and hit the same problem again since it's not obviously referring to mixed 2D/3D art. And being that it's for mixed 2D/3D art, it's also too specific to handle the other ways 2D and 3D can be mixed in an image, requiring another tag anyway.

That's exactly it. photo_background and screencap_background can't be misused in the same way because full photos and screencaps aren't allowed, so you can't have a post that's just a photo or just a screencap getting tagged photo_background or screencap_background respectively. But you can have a post that's just a 3D render that people think should be tagged 3d_background, since a fully 3D render with a background will obviously have a 3d_background.

At first, I thought this was an implication and was neutral, then I realized it was an alias. I'm opposed to this because I have 3d_(artwork) blacklisted but not 3d_background.
Your idea of "a more general 'mixed 2D/3D' tag" sounds interesting but I don't think this alias will help with that. Instead, the existing mistags should be corrected and 3d_background aliased or implied to the new tag.
I searched 3d_background 3d_(artwork) and scoffed at how few mistags there were since there were only 4 pages until I realized 3d_background -3d_(artwork) was only 6 pages. For some reason, I thought it was a more common tag.

Every post with 3d_background should be tagged with 3d_(artwork) (like the other medium tags, it applies if any part is made in that medium, it doesn't have to be the whole thing). It would have the same effect on people with 3d_(artwork) blacklisted regardless if it's an alias or implication.

That is an option to alias 3d_background to a new mixed 2D/3D tag, if someone can clean up the mistags from the 9 pages of results the tag currently has, and can keep it clean while coming up with a name and waiting for the request to be approved (and hope people will stop misusing it when they see it adding that mixed tag).
