Topic: Tag alias: furry_fandom -> invalid_tag

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

"Not used often enough" is a terrible reason to ban a tag. It's easy to imagine a picture depicting, commenting on, or joking about the fandom as an entity. And it's easy to imagine wanting to search for that too. There's probably a lot of images it would fit on that people just didn't think to use it.

Edit- Ah, I fixated on the wrong thing.

It not being used enough isn't the reason for getting rid of it, they just mentioned it offhand. It falls in line with the likes of furryart, commission, etc. Tags that get tossed on because uploaders are too lazy to change the tags from one site to another, or serve no purpose to us due to their broad nature. This site targets the furry fandom, thus every post would theoretically have that tag.

Yeah, I'll remove the last bit for the sake of clarity.

There's no other valid tag it could mean, or be related to, so yeah aliasing to invalid_tag is good.

I wonder why DubsTheFox is against it.

Logically, we could probably use this tag for human-character-in-a-fursuit posts, or other peripheral furry-related but not furry-featuring artworks.

The tag is clear from the few uses it does have, IMO. They're all about the community itself.

Also, seems undertagged, honestly?

I kinda feel like there is a place for a tag used on posts that reference the furry fandom itself:

Pretty much every current usage of this tag fits in line with this - it's not just indiscriminately slapped on any image like furry furryart or other invalidated tags. I do wonder a little how many of the voters actually looked at its usage before voting up.

It does sometimes get used to mean "something for furries" and needed to be removed. It's kind of along the lines of the brony tag in my mind, where the tag may be intended to refer to the fandom itself, but has people tagging it to mean it's an image for people in the fandom (brony is certainly a bigger problem with it basically being an alternative my_little_pony tag, but it does happen with furry_fandom too). Maybe having a tag like the_furry_fandom in the copyright category, to more clearly indicate it as referring to the fandom itself and not something that looks like it's for the furry fandom.

40 removals (some of which were valid and re-added) in 12 years doesn't even seem close to a big deal to me, but if the_furry_fandom instead makes people happier I'll be fine with that.

brony definitely has problems, 212 current uses where barely any actually contain a brony, and over 200 instances of it being removed from a post. Maybe brony_fandom could be a solution to that too.

we have tags like ai_generated_media_(subject) to refer the subject of the matter instead of the image itself is (somewhat) ai-generated. perhaps we should alias the thing to “furry_fandom_(subject)” for better clarity?

Using furry_fandom_(subject) seems reasonable, but i'm not sure whether it'll be good to alias furry_fandom directly to it

That was a sleepy misvote. I was very much in favor of this alias when I made the vote. The tag seems to be utterly useless because this website is made for furries, therefore most posts should be somewhat related to the furry fandom. And I see that it can will be misused from users who are new here (or don't care enough), who dump every possible tag on an image. But if we use it as a tag for Easter eggs/memes we have in the fandom, this could be an interesting tag. So I 😐 it now.

I don't know why so many are voting to get rid of it, I'm not seeing any real argument for why it should be invalidated other than people misusing it when tag stuffing and that it's undertagged.

In my opinion, furry_fandom seems like a reasonable tag for some grandfathered content, posts that depict furry conventions, or art that talks about the fandom

Just as a heads up topic #41258 just recently aliased furryfandom to invalid_tag. Wherever furry_fandom goes, it probably should follow.

Those are the exact reasons why I voted for this alias and when it comes to the few posts focusing on Furry or the fandom they should be moved to meta_humor. I've alrady done that for the 3 posts embedded by faucet.

I don't mind these tags not being aliased to invalid_tag, too many posts are aliased to it already, but the alternative would be the invalid category like furry.
