Topic: [APPROVED] Idol BUR

The bulk update request #6586 is active.

create alias idol (2) -> idol_(disambiguation) (2)
change category idol_(disambiguation) (2) -> invalid

Reason: This tag (idol) is a mixture of several things.

Pop idols (I made idol_outfit for this):

post #4574923 post #4271041

Artifacts:

post #4547744 post #4427630

Characters who are idols in canon, but have no indication of being such in the image:

post #3872775 post #4087601

Since it is so overwhelmingly mixed, it should be disambiguated. Some tags that could be listed on the disambiguation page are idol_outfit, fertility_idol, idol_worship (maybe?). Any other suggestions welcomed.

EDIT: The bulk update request #6586 (forum #391048) has been approved by @slyroon.

Since the outfits pop idols wear are so varied, what about pop_idol or idol_singer? Wikipedia calls them japanese idols so that's another option

I'm fine with any of those as well, my tag is so small that it shouldn't need to alias, I can just move the posts to whatever tag we decide on.

I think japanese_idol makes it clearest vs. like, other pop stars?

So what did we want to do for the j-pop idol tag? japanese_idol?

And are there other tags that I should include on the disambiguation wiki?

I think all of these are good options but all have small flaws and also all have reasons for being good ideas
I believe the concept of a Japanese idol doesn't necessarily have to imply that they're singers although that is usually implied. Pop_idol doesn't exactly catch the same "aesthetic", it was also mentioned that it crosses over with western pop singers who bring an entirely different vibe attached to the cultures they're found in.

My favorite out of the three is probably also japanese_idol

The bulk update request #7707 is pending approval.

create alias idol_singer (0) -> japanese_idol (199)
create alias j-pop_idol (0) -> japanese_idol (199)
create alias k-pop_idol (0) -> japanese_idol (199)

Reason: Two months later but realized these aliases would be a good idea for future-proofing japanese_idol...

K-pop idols specifically are modeled on the Japanese idol industry and I don't think are distinctive enough to be identifiable by TWYS unlike the differences between Japanese idol culture and Western popstars. Also even in real life the distinction between the two is blurry, k-pop idols do great in Japan and often release Japanese versions of their songs, and Japanese idols sometimes join k-pop groups...

Maybe a bit late to ask, but is there another term that we could use as the 'main' tag instead of japanese_idol? I can foresee people complaining about or trying to get around tagging it because a character isn't specifically Japanese

We were trying to figure one out but we couldn't really think of one. Idol singer was an option, but not all idols are actually singers, unfortunately. The Japanese in the tag name refers to the industry and culture originating in Japan rather than the specific character being Japanese.
