remove implication colorful_background (242) -> colorful (5)

Reason: I would say a good 70% of images I have to remove colorful from for being unfitting to the tag come from people tagging colorful_background and it implying colorful.

The thing is, I wouldn't neccesarily say these aren't colorful_background, they just don't fit the scope of colorful, which is supposed to be for images with multiple bright, vibrant colors:

And of course, this would do nothing to stop people from misusing colorful to mean "it has color" (though based on how many of those are muscular men with a wall of tags I suspect a lot of that is one user spamming tags), but at least it'll reduce the amount of cleanup this tag requires regularly.

Oh that's I'llKogYourMaw, our (no longer) resident tagging overachiever.

Anyways, do we want to keep colorful? I'm leaning towards yes, since it tags a somewhat apparent theme of the artwork, but it is pretty subjective. The wiki does not help matters a single bit, with post #175285 being used as an example of both suggested usage and non-usage of the tag (it has now been removed)

I'd say it's no more subjective than any other color related tag, but the wiki honestly could do with a serious rework. Might take a crack at a complete rewrite of it in a bit (and share here before changing it obviously).

The name might be a bit unintuitive though, I wonder if something like vibrant_colors or colorful_theme would be better and ward off misuse. Personally this is one of my favorite tags and I would hate to see it go as I spend a lot of time maintaining it whenever I have free time. I love bright, colorful artwork, haha.

Proposed rewrite

post #2181666 post #738112 post #3113796 post #139610

Posts with a focus on the usage of a range of vibrant, bright colors. Specifically, posts under this tag place a large amount of emphasis on the differences in varying hues and how they play off each other.

This tag is not mutually exclusive with warm_colors, cool_colors, restricted_palette or the various colored theme tags, however, it should generally not be used on monochrome images, or images consisting of very similar colors that are hard to distinguish.

Examples of posts that should not be tagged colorful

post #2138702 post #94236

These posts focus on specific colors, with accent colors being very similar to the main color. While they are vibrant and saturated, the difference in hues is not the focus of these posts.

post #2664602 post #3426629

The rainbows in these posts are tiny accents and are not the focus of the image, and the rest of the image does not fit the definition of this tag.

post #1246280 post #215460

The colors here are mostly dark and desaturated.

I've cleaned up 40/73 pages of colorful order:score -webm now. Waiting on cooldown again. On the bright side, a lot of what I've removed the tag from was a straightforward swap to warm_colors or cool_colors.

remove alias colourful (0) -> colorful (5)

Reason: I finished cleaning up colorful minus webms and flash, and while I was doing that I was thinking and I think the best course of action to ward off the rest of the mistagging would be to 1. update the wiki (see my proposal above), and 2. to rename it to something more intuitive. I think the best option is colorful_theme because it expresses that it needs to be the focus of the image, makes it clear it isn't just "has colors", and matches with our other *_theme tags.

Part 2:

alias colourful -> colorful_theme
alias colorful -> colorful_theme
category colorful_theme -> meta

I'm not inclined to keep colorful since that's basically everything that's not black_and_white, grayscale, and arguably monochrome, spot_color, or any of the [non-black]_and_white tags. The latter three could be considered transitional between the first two tags and full on colorful. In fact, where do they end and colorful begin? Is a full on blue monochrome colorful enough to count as colorful?

Further, tagging colorful versus colorful_background is like tagging red versus red_background or red-theme or red spot color. What exactly is being called "colorful"? The picture overall? Then why not tag it as colorful_picture or leaving it searchable as "-black_and_white -grayscale"?

This is why I think the tag needs a rename, because there are definitely a lot of images that have a colorful THEME, but as is people misinterpret the tag the same way something like "red" would.

I wrote a new wiki proposal for colorful_theme above. But in short - "Posts with a focus on the usage of a range of vibrant, bright colors. Specifically, posts under this tag place a large amount of emphasis on the differences in varying hues and how they play off each other."
