According to the hi_res wiki, it's for images that are at least 1200 pixels tall or 1600 pixels wide, not 1080 pixels. This would apply to 1920x1080 because of the width being greater than 1600, but 1440x1080 shouldn't be tagged hi_res.

I agree the tag should be aliased away, and maybe it's "good enough" to deal with a few mistags now and then (especially if there are bots that fix the hi_res/absurd_res/etc tags automatically).

Oh prolly it only applies on 16:9 or widescreen aspect ratio
