Topic: why aren't offensive comments removed?

Posted under General

Why aren't all rule-breaking comments always hidden when the commenters are warned/banned for them? The reason creepy and aggressive comments are against the rules is because they're inappropriate and offensive and nobody wants to see them, especially not artists and character owners.

Anecdotal but one artist that previously let me upload for them went DNP in part over transphobic comments on their work. All those commenters had been punished already for the remarks, but staff left the comments up and the artist was understandably upset about still having to look at them when they checked the comments.

Examples of what you shouldn't do

Updated

... Was the artist specifically hitting "show all comments" to show ones that had been downvoted into oblivion? Because 99.99% of the time that's the only way you're going to see that.

Also having them up just encourages more people to contribute to arguments, drama, or otherwise unwanted comment threads. Not even in direct ways either- "Well this escalated quickly" and "omg what happened here" type comments can end up filling the comments section.

looking at tickets, over the past year or so it seems like rule breaking comments, especially the more egregious examples, as well as pointless spam-type comments, are actually being hidden pretty frequently.

previously I only remember seeing stuff getting hidden on the regular when it was actually like linking to illegal stuff and piracy.

Not necessarily. If a post is getting brigaded those comments can end up being highly rated.

One interesting note on this is that if you are posting your art in public you are posting it for everyone to see, which means you do need a bit of a backbone regardless of whatever you are drawing. Why I used to see people only post on Deviantart way back when, because they would ban people from their entire page and delete all their comments if they said the slightest criticism when trying to be constructive of their work.

Here, the comments get downvoted and hidden if they are offensive. You have to manually open the comments to view them, why do that if you can't handle it? Plus, examples have to be there otherwise people can't see what you shouldn't do, or the sources as to the reason why some people are banned. But I do quite agree those comments going "Lol comments" ect get a bit tiring.

We've changed from rarely hiding comments, to almost always hiding comments now. Unless the comment has replies, we don't like hiding multiple people's comments, especially if there's a chain. Some staff also seemingly haven't gotten the memo, despite us agreeing to start hiding comments more often multiple times internally ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I see, good to know, thanks!

Most art here isn't posted by the artist themselves. We should be grateful to artists who allow us to have their work here :P it sucks to get nasty comments on your work after you graciously allowed someone else to repost it. Artists are doing us a favor, not the other way around.
