Reason: In the discussion in https://e621.net/forum_topics/43680, we are trying to avoid tag bloat and combinatorial explosions. One of the generally-agreed-upon suggestions is to get rid of these "double-double" tags. e621 does not need to be In-N-Out burger, tag combinations like clothed_anthro nude_anthro will work fine in place of clothed_anthro_nude_anthro.

Absolutely agree with getting rid of these tags but wouldn't it be cleaner to alias them away instead of invalidating? Then there wouldn't be any cleanup needed. How about aliasing to the first half of the pair, so larger_male_smaller_female for example would alias to larger_male? That way typing in larger_male won't suggest smaller_female, like it would if it was aliased the opposite way

That's how I feel. Aliasing clothed_anthro_nude_herm to clothed_anthro, for example, does a better job of getting rid of the tags. Simply changing it to the Invalid category doesn't get rid of the tags, they'll still exist and people can still tag them, needing manual removal, while aliasing to the first part of the tag will get rid of it without unexpected autocomplete results.

Though some of these tags, like clothed_female_nude_female have aliases and implications on them, which will need to be removed to be able to alias them away.

Yeah, this is what happens when you allow every conceivable form of clothed_<gender>_nude_<gender> (and in some cases clothed_<form>_nude_<form> or a mix of the two combined) to exist without keeping them in check.

Quite a number of the aliases and implications are from impidinkadoo, and the rest concerning intersex were filled out in topic #27362

Never mind, it was only a few hundred posts so I manually cleaned them up. Now every double-double tag has each of their component tags also tagged, and it is safe to apply the BURs now.

Criminy. What ever could have possessed people to add these tags in the first place? Like, I get the utility of tags that describe combinations of attributes on the same character (in my perfect world, there would be a way to search for only posts where {tag1 tag2 tag3} are all attributes of the same character), but surely there are very few edge cases where just searching "nude_male clothed_female" etc won't just get them exactly what they're looking for.

Not quite sure what to make of this, figured some context might be helpful.
Tags like this often exist because of specific kinks. CFNM, for example, is a relatively specific tag that ties into humiliation.

Checking https://e621.net/forum_posts/400883 seems to show that this tag has been consolidated down into, and broken down into, clothed/nude, male, and female.
This doesn't serve the same function as the original tag, as when searching all together, you can get results for CMNF, clothed male nude female, as well.

The component tags should consist of clothed_male and nude_female, not just the genders and clothed/nude.
This effectively invalidates the entire CFNM tag and renders it impossible to search for anything specific to the kink, as searching for clothed_male nude_female yields far fewer results than the cfnm tag did.

the clothed_x_nude_y tags had really never been used properly. since their inception they were being added to mountains of posts containing a) characters who weren't interacting, b) "nude" characters who weren't fully nude, c) "clothed" characters who were mostly nude, d) some combinations of the above, or e) ferals.

it's better to just have the clothed_* and nude_* tag groups separate and use clothed/nude where applicable.

You know, I can't really disagree with that reasoning. I suppose the only solid course of action is just to tag properly going forward. Still kinda sucks that a ton of images that fit the idea of CFNM and the like were caught into the crossfire, but it can still be replicated with long tag lists in a single search. Better than having the tags be littered with things that didn't fit.

I think I just see something like CFNM as being in a different realm than all of the other combination tags, seeing how it's a specific kink.

That is already what is happening. Instead of clothed_male_nude_female you just need to search for clothed_male nude_female, NOT clothed male nude female.

But that's not what the tags were replaced with. You can try searching for it yourself, but images previously tagged with clothed_male_nude_female didn't get tagged with clothed_male and nude_female. They got tagged with clothed/nude male and female.
