I could see characters of unknown/no gender being excluded from 1boy1girl tags, so it's not necessarily a guarantee that every use of this tag will be a duo.

Aliasing to male/female may be better. All the current results for this tag are male/female, and compared to male or female individually, the gender pairing tag is more likely to be omitted by uploaders, especially uploaders who are adding tags like this. You could make an argument that people will use the tag for posts where a male and a female are both present but not interacting with one another, but that seems like a very unlikely situation and one that could easily be fixed if it ever does happen. A tag like this implies a sexual pairing, which is how people are most likely going to use it the vast majority of the time.

Also, consider it from the searching perspective - say someone comes here from Danbooru or some site that utilizes tags in this format and tries to search for this. They'll just be confused when it aliases to male and they don't find what they want. They'll figure it out eventually, but it would be easier if it just points them to what they were actually trying to find, which is male/female.
