Topic: [APPROVED] Move aesthetic to invalid category

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #7763 is active.

remove alias aesthetic (1) -> invalid_tag (0)

Reason: Aesthetic (and aesthetics) are usually tagged to mean a couple of different visual styles (based on the change history for aesthetic and the posts currently tagged aesthetics) and it'd be more useful for the tag to be in invalid category so it can be replaced with a more specific visual style rather than just being nuked.

alias aesthetics -> aesthetic
category aesthetic -> invalid

Disambiguation page should list:

I'm sure there's more I'm missing, but these are the ones that come to mind. I can't see any changes for aesthetic newer than 4 years to see what it's been mistagged on more recently, but a lot of vaporwave and synthwave stuff seems to have gotten the tag in the past, and aesthetics is mostly 90s and Y2K stuff.

This BUR brought to you by me stumbling on aesthetics in the wild just now...

why not just make them meta tags like other tags that say something about the style or medium

I don't think you understand what this would do... It isn't getting rid of the specific aesthetic/visual style tags... It's moving aesthetic to invalid and aliasing aesthetics to it. Because "aesthetic" is a meaningless tag that people add to mean a bunch of different things with actual tags.

This doesn't affect any tag besides aesthetic (already invalid) and aesthetics.

The list of tags in the first post is just tags that should be listed on aesthetic's wiki page as tags someone might be looking for :P

I think invalid tags can still have their pages used to list other tags (in this case, actually usable tags that describe specific aesthetics), if that's what you're saying.

Uhm, isn't that the definition in practice, of disambiguation tags? Hmm, have to think about that...

That's the purpose of non-invalid_tag invalid tags, usually. It doesn't have to be a disambiguation to point to suitable tags

No longer planning on including the aesthetics -> aesthetic alias? you could've bundled the category change into the first BUR btw

It just slipped my mind, whoops
