Topic: Tag alias: live_birth -> birth

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The tag alias #70149 live_birth -> birth is pending approval.

Reason: Redundant. "Birth" is just an abbreviated form of "live birth."

Any "birth" posts that, for whatever reason, are not "live birth" (e.g., stillborn) should instead be tagged with whatever type of birth they are. Note that a lot of birth tagging is a hot mess, and this alias meant as a small step toward reining that in.

I sort of liked the idea of having hatching also imply birth alongside live_birth, but these birth tags have always been kind of a mess and it may not be worth trying to maintain that distinction when hatching is such a small, niche tag and the vast majority of cases are going to be live_birth.

Oviposition shouldn't be tagged as birth at all, in any case. That does not make any sense. Eggs might not even be fertilized, there's no birth involved.

IMO live_birth and oviposition should both alias to birth

I'm down for live_birth aliasing to birth but oviposition should stay very, very, very separate from birth, as it already is. The wiki explicitly states to not use birth when eggs are being laid- at least it did until you changed it in March. Not only for the fact of not all eggs being fertilized, but also for the fact that - for tagging and blacklisting purposes - some people really like seeing eggs, but want nothing to do with live young, or vice versa. They should not be conflated.

What about crowning, then? @Moonlit-Comet has been removing it from some oviposition posts, and the current wiki says it's meant for childbirth specifically, but I distinctly recall the comment that led to the creation of this tag, comment #2468392, using the word to refer to oviposition. Should it be split into subtags or do we just make it generic over whatever is coming out of the womb?

As far as I know crowning is never used to refer to egg laying in real life. Also, that tag and comment were made before the wiki overhaul that emphasizes that birth must not be conflated with oviposition. Overhaul was two years ago, the comment was eight. Could very much mean at the time they didn't realize or know that birth and oviposition must be different.

I've been removing crowning from oviposition posts because of its association with live birth and the wiki referring only to live offspring. If the site collectively considers it appropriate to keep crowning on oviposition posts, I will not continue doing that.
