The tag alias #70410 sprite_art -> pixel_(artwork) has been rejected.

Reason: Is there a meaningful difference between these tags? I guess technically a sprite is the character/foreground prop and not the background but the way it's used on here seems to be synonymous with just pixel art?

Sprite) is a particular way of using images in computer graphics. Any image can be a sprite, even non-pixelated one.
Some of the posts should be retagged to pixel_art or aliasing, but most do look like sprite or sprite set showcases.
