Topic: Animated comic/png is not animated

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #8203 is pending approval.

remove implication animated_png (499) -> animated (154815)
remove implication animated_comic (1231) -> animated (154815)
create alias non-still (2) -> animated (154815)

Reason: Firstly, this will affect exactly 0 posts that correctly fall into the category of animated. Not now, and not in the future (barring tag vandals) because animated is automatically added to videos upon upload.

Secondly, not all videos fall under animated, as it could be a slideshow, which does not count as animated. The tag locks of +slideshow -animated shows this has been the policy for a while.

Non-still was meant to be used for something, but it was never picked up and should be aliased away

Should probably get confirmation that animated will be still be automatically applied. I know it is with other video formats, but that does not garuntee it also happens with apng.

They should be given better tag names in that case. animated_png and animated_comic clearly indicate something is animated by their name, meaning it's very easy to imagine both people going around adding animated to posts with those tags regardless of them being a slideshow or not, constant requests to re-implicate them since "it's in the name", and probably result in some posts missing the animated tag (though I suspect this will often be fixed quickly, it's still extra work as a result of a fair assumption of an implication not being true, and a few can slip through some cracks). Part of me thinks slideshow should probably implicate animated to act as a catch-all for posts where the image changes with time, and get the helpful [anim] badge on thumbnails, as it would otherwise be easy to miss that an image is non-static if you're just flipping through or browsing posts.

For other video formats, animated gets automatically applied, even though for instance webm does not imply animated. That should be the same here.

Also, I understand your concern about the name, but "animated png" is the actual name of the format allowing this. It's also currently automatically applied when you upload one.

That said, I also agree that animated should include situations like this, but the existing tag locks means it currently does not.

The site automatically adds the animated tag to apng posts like webm? I see, that still leaves animated_comic with gifs though, and gifs can be still/non-animated images (rare these days since it's limited to 256 colors, but not terribly abnormal especially for older images). See also my edit:

Such a thing would also help with edge cases like a series of disjointed images that smoothly move and crossfade between each other, making it both smooth animation and a slideshow that's otherwise supposed to be exclusive.
