Topic: "The sources field is for submission links where the art can be found"

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Just recieved a a neutral record for my account where it's saying

"The sources field is for submission links where the art can be found, not profile/gallery links".

But it is a strange subject to put because on upload page it's literally saying

"A link to the artists page where this was obtained, and a link to the submission page where this image was obtained"

.
So basically it is not forbidden to just add galleries of an artist without the submission link too? Because what if I can't find this one art? It's just easier to put the gallery itself so it will be helpful as well for the artist.

So idk still a strange rule and record for that x.x

It says "A link to the artist page... and a link to the submission page...". See also, howto:source.
Ideally, your sources should look like this (by order of importance):

  • Original submission page (i.e., where the image is obtained)
  • Alternative submission pages (i.e., other pages/websites where the image could be found, such as the commissioner's submission page, etc.)
  • Artist's profile link (optional*, useful in cases where the above two sources do not exist)
  • Direct image link (optional*, automatically added when uploading through direct image URL)

*Optional as meaning that they are supplementary. They should not exist by their own and should be accompanied by at least one submission page being sourced.)

You are expected to provide a link to the submission page at the very least so that it could be easily sourced to where you had obtained the image.
Otherwise, the approver will need to do all the hard work of finding the source and making sure it is not leaked/pirated commercial content.

For example, on post #4789681:
You provided https://www.furaffinity.net/user/walk-w-igny/ & https://www.patreon.com/IgnyWalk as the ONLY sources, which do nothing other than telling you that the artist is on FA and Patreon.
If you had provided https://www.furaffinity.net/view/47731380 as the only source, it would have been infinitely better since one can easily find the source of the image itself.

If you really could not find the image source itself, you can run it through SauceNAO to quickly find them. Do note though that it only works for certain websites like FA.

So idk still a strange rule and record for that x.x

It is not a permanent record, grey records are normally given as a heads-up that you had violated a rule (see e621:records).
If you don't re-violate the same rule after 6 months, you can request for it to be expunged from the mod team.

If you don't correct yourself and repeat the same violation again, then you will get a (red) warning for rule violation.
If you repeatedly violate the same rule over and over again, then you can get a suspension which will lock you out from uploading.

Doesn't this break unavailable_at_source?

Are you supposed to make an artist tag wiki and add the galleries there? I've routinely tagged galleries so this was interesting to read for me. If I have it at my fingertips, I link to multiple posts with the image, even if they aren't bit-for-bit duplicates.

Thinking on it, just by coincidence I usually follow the rule, unless the rule is for bit-for-bit only. Like I'll link to a Patreon post with a higher quality that someone can only access if they are a subscriber, in addition to the literal source.

(it becoming) unavailable at source usually only occurs after the post has been approved, and in the case where it's unavailable at the time of upload you can check the wayback machine. There are many nuances I've missed though.

Yes, you can add their galleries to their artist pages, that is appreciated. Yes, linking to all the places you can find it is also great, though be aware you have up to a max of 10 links in the sources section. It's ok if the posts aren't bit-for-bit duplicates as long as the reason is because of compression or very minor artist changes.

Add better_version_at_paywall (bvap) if you're linking that.
