honestly, penis_tip is not a great tag name as is...

Seconding this. It's not immediately obvious what it is (could be 'glans' or 'pointed tip' or something else. Lipsticking is specific, but it's slang/jargon. Maybe poking_out_of_sheath to go with poking_out?

I feel like that probably should be fine.

although, not the biggest fan of tag names like this that lack a subject noun, they can have some ambiguity. poking_out is a good example of that, actually...

How much counts as the tip? Most of the time I see this used, it's more like half the shaft sticking out.

penis_tip:

Preferably only the tip of it (henceforth, a penis tip) peeks out, but this tag broadly describes situations where a significant portion of the penis (at least half of its conceivable length) remains hidden internally.

Anything less than half according to the penis tip wiki, apparently

As far as I can tell, penis_poking_out is kept separate from this tag as that's just for penises poking out of clothing, not penises poking out from the character's own anatomy. I feel like poking_out_of_sheath will cause confusion with that tag if they are going to continue to be kept separate.

partially_sheathed

is currently aliased to penis_tip; that honestly sounds like a decent name to me. Any thoughts on that?

It can work, but might be applied in cases where it's partially sheathed but mostly out.

+1 for partially_sheathed

that applies much further than penis tip currently does, I'd expect a tag like that to apply to any not fully erect penis combined with a sheath

I'm rejecting that since it clearly isn't happening (tbh I'm kinda preferential to the opposite direction, even if it is slang)

Can't say I like the opposite direction. Even as slang, it creates a perception that only works with certain types and colors of penises, and certain types of sheaths. A green ridged dragon/fantasy penis coming out of an equine-like sheath doesn't really fit the "lipstick" visual, like a smooth red or pink canine penis coming out of a furred canine-like sheath does, but it would still be a penis coming out of a sheath that the tag is intended for.

Honestly, if the penis_tip tag is such a problem with being misinterpreted as any visible tip regardless of how much of the rest of the penis is visible, aliasing it the other way would still leave that problem, IMO. People mistagging penis_tip will then just mistag lipsticking instead. I can't say I've seen too much of a problem with penis_tip being tagged on fully visible penises.

As it is, I find lipsticking itself to be easily misinterpreted. This is the first I'm hearing of the term in this manner, and my first thought was slang for fellatio -- a character using their lips to pleasure someone's penis/"stick" (which would be any kind of penis), and ending in -ing to indicate an action. But even with the visual concept of a tube of lipstick, it could also work for a mostly or fully erect canine penis coming out of a sheath (just perhaps without much of a visible knot, as a pre-orgasm canine penis normally looks like), rather than just the tip.

mostly_sheathed? or is that silly

Edit: or slightly_unsheathed

I honestly like those better than anything else, for this meaning. Pretty easily understood/not ambiguous. I feel like one of these could work.

Comparing them:
Slightly_unsheathed will probably keep it more to just the tip in practice.
Mostly_sheathed would probably slide include to any degree of partially_unsheathed sooner or later.

So slightly_unsheathed might be easier to maintain longterm. But I think either name for it could work well enough. So +1

As for the others:
- most things would be better than 'lipsticking' for reasons already mentioned. It's just unintuitive unless you're already familiar with it, and it's easy to misinterpret as well. We could probably do better.
- penis_tip honestly makes it sound like it's just tagging a differently colored tip (which is a common feature) regardless of anything else and nothing to do with sheaths. Just like ear tips and tail tips. I don't find it surprising it gets mistagged for non-sheath related reasons. It only seems obvious inside of context when you are looking at just_the_tip poking out of a sheath. And then you go 'oh, okay I get it now'. But just the tag seen by itself doesn't provide any context for when and why a tip matters, so people guess other things which also could make sense. The constant mistags are pretty natural on this one. Which means the tag name just isn't helping it function. So a clearer tag name would be a step in the right direction here.

And that's partly why I like the sheathed/unsheathed phrasing options. It feels much easier to grasp the intended concept for it.

+1 to mostly_sheathed I believe this will be best option for the name. I'm not so sure i like the phrasing of slightly_unsheathed

Not to spoil the seeming consensus but this usage of "sheath" within the tag term might prove rather problematic for characters that have the penis peeking out of a genital slit or cloaca rather than a mammalian sheath...

IF you go for a tag with sheath within the term, you may have to also create separate tags for the other types.

Ah damn. But that's a very good point. Hmm...

Oh! It sounds a bit clunky but, how about tip_out_of_* ? So tip_out_of_sheath , tip_out_of_slit and tip_out_of_cloaca etc. It keeps the meaning clearer (which we need), but it also handles the fact not everything is a sheath anatomically. I'm not a huge fan of three tags but...if it works the best then alright. Thoughts?

I do not think these would do anything for the the issue being argued in this thread, these have the same basic meaning as penis_tip just adding a specification of where they come out of. Key point is not "where" but "how much" and these do not specify that any more than just penis tip does.

Following the inverse of something like almost_nude or tags such as barely_visible_genital_slit, maybe try something like

slightly_exposed_penis_tip

using 'exposed' rather than 'visible' because visible in general is in reference to the viewers perspective rather then the actual state of the subject.

---
Il also add that tip_out_of_* could also potentially end up tagged on objects or parts of vored/unbirthed characters that are peeking out of which ever genital opening.

"exposed" in tag names usually is used in reference to a bodypart not being covered by a piece of clothing*, so it wouldn't really fit here, I feel.

*or an internal organ being outside a character's body.
