I have another idea! This thread should be stickied

hey tony remember when you said no one runs this resolution anymore?

I used this resolution until a year ago. I just got a laptop with 1366x768 (hey it's just 342px, OF PROGRESS!)

Actually, I don't care about the ads anymore, got used to them. It's just the size what bugs me, specially on mobile (320x240px).

They're just being dicks*, going between the post and the comments :V

*No pun intended. Oh wait! It was!

Updated by anonymous

I generally stop scrolling down once I see the comment box, and I doubt I'm the only one. If the ads were below that, most of the time I probably wouldn't even see them, and then what would be the point?
On the topic of content, I'd rather see dildos here even though they'd be blacklisted as an ordinary post than 95% of the crap ads on TV.

Updated by anonymous

Personally, I feel the new ad placement between the image and the comments is too obtrusive, primarily because of its height. I think a leaderboard (728x90) ad would be perfectly acceptable, though, and would still be similarly visible.

Is there supposed to be maybe a vertical rectangle ad between the Search field and the taglist on the left of the post? I see in the HTML where the Javascript is, and I've disabled ad-blocking for this site, but I don't see an ad there. I'm not able to tell why no ad is appearing. Was it disabled for not generating clicks? Or is there a bug in the script, like where it attempts document.write ("&context=", when I think that should be document.write ("&context="?

Also, the noscript implementation for that left side appears broken, as the server gave me a link that passes an HTTP POST parameter of "cb=INSERT_RANDOM_NUMBER_HERE". Not that I expect that impacts many people.

Edit: Something definitely strange going on here. I do occasionally see an ad in that spot for Furrymate, but no other ads and usually not even that. Tried on Firefox 16.0.2 and Chrome 23.0.1271.91 m on Windows 7, and the default browser on Android 4.0.4. Also noticed that one of the medium rectangle ads under the posts is only showing inconsistently on all of these platforms as well.

Good points regarding the placement of the ads in relation to tag editing and so on.

What if we moved them below the 'edit / respond / full size' buttons, and made it so when you hit 'edit tags' it displayed them right at the bottom of the page?

Regarding ad content, it's still early days and was kind of a chicken and egg scenario - you can't sell ad space to conventions etc until you have the ads up, and people won't like them if they don't see relevant ads... I will be soliciting large numbers of potential advertisers as soon as the ad placements are sorted.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys :3

Varka

Maybe. What about under the Statistics/Options/History/Related Posts area, right on the side, under them? Seems like a good place, people will notice (most of the time) and it (in theory) won't get in anybody's way.

That was Varka playing around with ruby according to aurali.
But yes, that dot is the best thing currently.

no burn it with fire (or at least put the ads somewhere else, middle of the page is annoying)

Hey folks,

Thanks to everyone for your really useful and informative feedback.

Reading over the last three pages of posts, I've gathered the following conclusions from what people have mentioned:

1) The rectangle ads are big and obtrusive; a leaderboard might be a better option for below the image.

2) The rectangle ads might be less intrusive if placed below the 'post a new comment' box.

3) The sidebar isn't being used, and a skyscraper ad might work well there.

4) The rectangle ads are splitting the page (between image and comments), and might do better at the bottom of the page.

5) There are too many Bad Dragon / dildo ads being shown.

Regarding the Bad Dragon dildo ads, they're being shown as a 'fallback' campaign, because we are still working on obtaining new advertisers for these slots, and Bad Dragon ads are shown as a default ad for when nobody else wants to show an ad. I imagine in a few months' time it'll be pretty rare to see a Bad Dragon ad, given the number of people who will likely be buying advertising too.

Me and the e621 team will be taking your comments into consideration and seeing what we can do to make the ads as unobtrusive as possible. I think there's a lot we can do to improve things =)

Thanks everyone - and as always, if you have more comments, feedback or ideas, please post em here!

Oh yeah, and we're currently ironing out the bugs with a new 'advertise here' sidebar we've added to each of the ads. It's making the rectangles show up stacked vertically instead of horizontally, and the leaderboard at the top of the site is too small for the ad plus the sidebar.

We should have it sorted soon :D

ok cool, the vertical stack was really bugging me.
each one being stuck on a default ad for dragon dildos is also annoying but hey, what else can be expected?

As has been mentioned, lower resolutions are still common these days thanks to small portable devices. My tablet runs something like 1280x800.

I'm still not seeing anything... there's the blue box that the ads would show up in, but it's empty. I wonder if AdBlock is just blocking when told not to, or it's an https issue?

I wasn't into the furry adds in the beginning, since I'm not a furry. I think these adds make the site look worse, and hope they are removed.

P.S. I'm not judging furrys, don't be hating.

(and nobody wants to pay, so... How about "suggestive adds" only? I'm not overly fond of bunny cocks anyway ._.)

Can I suggest putting a random thumbnail of an existent post from 1 of each 10 ads shown?

Adding "display: inline;" for the first ad works for now, though it ends on the right (not that it's a big problem)

oh man, I'm quoting our e6 Overlord!! *squeeee* *faints*

Splitting the page is a huge web design no-no. Use vertical ads on either side instead, and if you must have more banner ads, put them on bottom. There are plenty of booru-style sites with ads in reasonable configurations, this really shouldn't be that hard or even warrant a discussion.

inline-block is what you want him to use, but yeah we got that fixed. Everything's outside of ouroboros so it's a bit more difficult for changes to get done.

Probably a stupid idea but I think the ads would probably work best on search result pages.

I don't think you'll have much time for clicking when looking at a specific post, if you catch my drift.

They're also just kindof distracting there anyways, I'm somewhat glad they're all failing to load at the moment.

I tried with it but the ads just got stacked one over the other (or missing) *shrug* Nice to know it's fixed! :D

Just going to say: There is a lot of data about a post on the site. Use it.
Make advertisements rated (based on the sites' rating criteria). If it's safe, have it be able to be shown on every image or at least only safe images. If it's questionable, have it be able to be shown on every image but safe images, or at least only on questionable images. If it's explicit, have it only be able to be shown on explicit images.
It's been mentioned before by one or two other people, but it really sucks when you link a friend to something on the site then they're like LOL DRAGON DILDOS. Really annoying, and it's cutting in on that extra site traffic. I'd link something to my friends when I see something cool, but that 5-10 extra pageviews goes poof when a safe or questionable thing has BIG 'OL DRAGON DILDOS on it.

Random stabs at others, especially when the entire topic is only existing out of courtesy, are always neccesary.
How else are we members supposed to feel oppressed by the evil, evil admins.

Note to self: Request sarcasm font, just in case.

I wasn't aware of any offer to pay for an account as a way to get rid of the ads. I'm pretty sure no such offer exists. True, I haven't been on as often recently as I once was, but I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if such an offer were made.

The ads are supposed to support the site, and I'm sure the density of Bad Dragon products will go down as other people and groups buy ad space.

Updated by anonymous

I believe the ads would be better on the left or right side of the image. Commenters have to scroll down extra distance in order to post because of the new ad block, which is a little tedious.

Someone mentioned requesting a simple tagging list from advertisers to keep advertisements relevant to the picture being viewed, in the case of posts. Others mentioned sorting ads by the safe/questionable/explicit system as a minimum. Why not take it a step further and just let users tag the advertisements (responsibly) as any other post?

I realize this is a technically challenging form of in-house targeted marketing where implementation is key, but it seems appropriate for this website. If necessary, restrict tagging privileges or access to Privileged users at most. I'm sure the initial matching of tagged ads to posts can be performed and stored locally to a reference table, reducing serving overhead, and updated incrementally on a regular schedule. When serving, ads can be drawn from a pool where quotas are weighed against relevance to the post being viewed.

By theming ads to post content, e621 potentially averts perceived advertising obtrusiveness and generates more pay-per-click revenue. This efficient, granular control over advertising will help e621 select relevant advertisements, develop associations with affiliate's products, and ultimately increase turnaround time on ad quota packages.

...and that's as far as I got.

Updated by anonymous

Thanks to everyone who mentioned targeted ads, and using the metadata from images to provide better-fitting ads; this is something we are looking into and hope to implement in the future, as it would dramatically improve the relevancy of ads to the content being shown :3

If the adds are gone, then you'd need to pay for an account. Thats why safe adds are better than no adds, yeah?

Hey I think the rainbow effect is cool and mesmerizing and quite humorous actually. I have not found them to be distracting or annoying myself. I just tune them out. Plus I view e621 at home in my room. Hell if I had my own place and the extra money I would buy many of your products. I solute you for providing hours of fun and entertainment for many. Also If I had the extra to spare I would help with the monetary needs of this sight. I like it. Have an excellent day.

While I can understand why you need advertising, I think the ads should be moved to a more convenient spot. Perhaps below the comment section? Or maybe below the tags and info on the left?

Updated by anonymous

there should be a separate site for pony/brony related content.
e621 is bascially e926 but with ponies flooding everything.

Sadly unblocked the site for adblock, I wanna support the site, but not with giant ads in the middle :o

its hard to see the tags on thumbnails because the other thumbnails block it so i have to click on the picture to see the tags

Updated by anonymous

I personally think the new ad style works quite well. Its hard to oversee it, without being TOO aggressive. Dont get me wrong, it sure is but it could be way worser.

Actually i had to think really hard to remind myself of where the ads used to be placed.

Updated by anonymous

Honestly, I don't mind ads on the page if it keeps the site free for everyone.
My suggestion would be to put them either above the image like most places, or somewhere off to the side.
Directly under the image gets a little annoying when tagging or scrolling down to comments.
Just an opinion.

Updated by anonymous

made me use adblock for the first time in years, risking to kill kitties and free internet porn. i highly disapprove.

Updated by anonymous

Uhm.... the new add placement is waaaay too aggressive. Ditto on using left (under the tags, upvotes etc., preferably) of right. Not to mention having dildos on every page is a bit excessive and obscene (yes, even for e621 :C).

Everyone can rest assured that the ads are being worked on as time permits. :) Ad size and placement on e621.net is vital not only to our advertisers, but to our users, and we're very well aware of that. You will definitely see improvements to the ad system in the not-too-distant future, but again, it's a critically important aspect of the site, and thus is one that requires a lot of planning and testing before we finally get something that not only "looks right" but also "works right".

This entire thread has been reviewed very heavily and everyone's suggestions are being taken into consideration. There's just a lot going on right now, so again, it's getting handled as time permits. :)

this thread has worked as advertisement in itself.

Hey folks -

We've tweaked the placement of the ads a little, most notably reducing the number of rectangle ads from 2 to 1, and moving them to the bottom of the 'post a comment' box, which is now shown below the list of current comments on an image, to reduce the page splitting effect.

We've also been making a big effort to attract and solicit new advertisers; if you know of anyone who you think might want to advertise on e621, please do direct them to our 'advertise here' links shown next to each ad. Their support will help keep e621 going!

Many thanks to Tony and Aurali for their work on moving the ads to a more discreet location in this latest update!

Having the post-a-comment box at the bottom of the comments is not only less obtrusive but also more intuitive. Good choice.

But now I can't get it to show up again.
Maybe have a page that lists all the ads currently on the site?
