Topic: Making an alt account

Posted under General

Hi, I've been wanting to make a new account for another type of interest in art I'd love to share. I'm only going to be using the alt account for art posting purposes. I still want to continue my main account that I'm using here (mostly for the tame stuff)

Is it possible or does it risk the ban? Even as an artist?

As long as you aren't using it to vote cheat or do anything else disruptive on, it's fine
Telling us about the account will allow us to make a note of it so it doesn't come up as a surprise in the future
You can link it here if you like, or send me a dmail if you'd prefer it stayed private

Yeah, I've been told not to do anything that bypasses site limits (uploads, votes, tempbans, API, etc.), but it's not a horrible idea to make sure the staff know.

The basics have already been covered. I'm going to elaborate on a few things because some of this information is less obvious, is scattered around the website, and I do get questions about it. More people probably wonder without asking, so just to make some of the info more accessible:

- Anyone can have multiple accounts. You don't need to try to 'hide' an alt, it just makes you look weirdly suspicious. Having an alt is fine just as long as all of your accounts still respect the rules. It is only when you use an alt/main to break rules, that it then becomes an issue. If you see someone banned for being an alt, it's because of rules being broken by one (or more) of their accounts. It wasn't just for being an alt account.

- The site will require a different email per account. (Old accounts used to be able to share an email, but these days they won't be able to save their settings until they change that to be a different email per account. If you have an old account and cannot save the settings/blacklist/etc, that's probably why.)

- You can't use the alt to bypass limits (trying to instantly double your uploading limit instead of earning it, or to get around a ban, or to make rulebreaking comments on an alt instead of your main, etc etc). Those things tend to lead to records, or bans if already banned. Being spread across alts will not change this because the actions are still from the same user.

- The least obvious rule you have to be careful about with an alt account, is vote cheating. It basically means: don't use your alt to "double" your upvotes or downvotes on anything (images, comments, etc). The easiest way to avoid this, is to do all of your voting on one account and to avoid making upvotes/downvotes on the other account. That way you don't have to remember if you already did upvote/downvote on it, and which account you did it with, etc. Because no one's memory is that great. Just remember that it's one vote per user, regardless how many accounts you have. So just be careful about that.

- Also having conversations (or arguments) with your own alt, will get you some serious side-eye from the staff. Because we can see it. And we will wonder wtf that user was even thinking... lol

And to echo what Donovan said: If you want to drop a staff member a message to say "hey, this is my alt, just so you know" then we can add it to staff only information that you did so. It mainly shows us that you're not trying to do anything sus with it. It's not required, but it does help to make a good impression about what your intentions are overall. Especially if you are worried about it.

What about using alts to give a post 0 net upvotes, so 100 up and 100 down from alts for a total net of 0?

To paraphrase Tenboro: "No. That is all."
