Topic: Audio problems playing certain videos on mobile

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Ive been having this problem for about a year now, certain webm videos have choppy, distorted audio when playing them for me. I am on ios using safari. I don’t believe I’ve had this problem anywhere else, though I don’t often watch webm on other websites. It happens more often with large files, and very rarely the videos will fail to play at all. If the video has audio issues it will ALWAYS have audio issues no matter what I try. My speakers are working fine and the audio issues persist even when using headphones.

Yeah, I recently upgraded from an old iphone 6s where it had no audio issues to an iphone 12 and now certain videos in my favorites have audio issues (choppy audio). It's mainly any 3d model video which is strange.

Edit: spelling errors.

I think topic should be renamed to iphone, not mobile. On a android I meet zero problems with firefox browser. Looks like apple don't care that much about correct support of "non-apple-friendly" media formats. They use mostly AAC as audio format. When on webm here I noticed that used OPUS or Vorbis audio codec.

You can place links here of working / non-working video and I can analyze what codecs are used. I suspect that apple don't correctly supports OPUS on their web-browser. But who knows. May be Vorbis too.

Also youtube is not correct comparison because it will give you "apple-friendly" media format. So for audio youtube will always give you AAC audio codec stream, not OPUS. So you will never experience a problem with audio on youtube

This pretty much just comes down to Apple's awful support of webm and its audio codecs (being one of the companies that receive royalties from the mp4 format licensing is likely not a coincidence) and pretty much all you can do about it is watch the mp4 sample instead.

If you linked the videos I could probably analyze them and try and figure out what part exactly is unsupported, but it doesn't really change the fact that watching the mp4 sample is the only solution.

The iPhone 6S would've had no webm support at all, so you were previously being served mp4 files.

EDIT: Not sure if it's actually the cause, but it looks like iOS now supports VP9, which makes the band-aid fix at e72c0f4 (forum #414997) redundant. I don't know why we don't just always serve MP4 to iOS users like every other website does.
