Topic: Question regarding character tags and associatting them with other tags automatically?

Posted under e621 Tools and Applications

Hey there, I was wondering if its possible to associate a tag with other tags? Like for example, everytime I write a tag for a character named John or something, and that everytime I include that tag, other tags that are associated like yellow_fur, or small_tail would automatically be insertedo in that post.

Yes, those are called implications. But you shouldn't try to imply characters to traits they commonly have, because of situations like alternate_form.

No, because characters can always be drawn differently than how they normally are. There's no rule that John must always have yellow fur, for example. Or that their small tail is visible. They can be crossgender, alternate_species, etc. Implications to always apply feature tags to characters will result in uncorrectable mistags.

Alright, so what would be an appropriate way to use implications?

For characters, not really anything but implying them to what media they came from.

If any alternate_gender, alternate_form, alternate_species, alternate_color, species_transformation, gender_transformation, uncolored version, or other niche post would cause the implication to not apply even once then it is bad material for an implication.
Not every depiction of Mario or his clothes will include a human (even in his own series he can be an elephant), but every post with Mario or his clothes does include elements associated with Super Mario Bros.

We would NEVER automatically implicate general tags to character tags. The only instance where that would be appropriate if it was to link the copyright tag to the character.

For reasons already mentioned by everybody else, character features are not always consistent between posts, which makes automatic implications unreliable.
E.g., You can have a character who is known to be male, a canine, has black_eyes, etc. However, you can't stop artists from drawing them as female/crossgender, feline/alternate_species, or simply with closed_eyes, etc.

Obviously, this rule also applies to manual tagging whereby you would never go around blanket tagging every post of the character with their associated tags at a whim, without even checking to see if it is appropriate for that post.
It is considered Tagging Abuse and people have gotten permabanned for that in the past.

Mostly on general tags where the associations are logical.
E.g., Pants are a type of bottomwear/clothing.
