They're separate things. A snout is an extended face, like on a dog or lizard. You can have a visible snout without a visible nose, and vice-versa. If anything, they could be aliased to face_focus, if there's a desire to get rid of it.
But speaking of noses... anterior_nasal_aperture. Isn't that just a fancy term for nostrils? Which seems like an attempt to workaround nose being invalid. Should that be aliased?

No, that's just a fancy term for the opening in the skull the nose is attached to. But it sure does sound like a tag cooked up by one of our more obsessive taggers, only with several aliases stuck to it ( nasal_bone, nasal_hole, nose_hole, piriform_aperture, pyriform_aperture, skull_nasal_hole, skull_nose, skull_nose_hole).
We should alias it away, either to a more descriptive name, if we want to keep it, or just away in general, if we don't. Because it's not intuitive what it's referring to. Two of the four Recently Uploaded pictures when I looked at the wiki were mistagged (no skull or opening in the skull were visible) which leads me to believe that taggers frequently really have no clue what it is meant to refer to. As Watsit wondered above:

Looking at the search results more broadly, it seems they're primarily tagged for nostrils. Typically, dots or lines on the face or end of a snout, like this:

but also normal pig noses, dog noses, cat noses, etc, with a clear nasal opening. Actual skull holes seem to be in the minority of uses.

I thought so. It supports my opinion that the tag either needs a rename or be invalidated. The current tag is too obfuscated to be used properly.
