We've got a pretty much even split between the two (15-17), so I'm not sure about this one.

Edit: Cancel that, I need to look more into this.

Unlike yesterday's example, HMMWV, "Thompson submachine gun" isn't really an obscure name, so I'd be in favor of that, since it's more technically accurate.

There are about a dozen nicknames for the weapon, "Tommy gun," "Chicago typewriter," "M1928," etc.

Alright, after looking at -tommy_gun thompson_submachine_gun, it looks like a couple users bulk replaced ~10 of those with thompson_submachine_gun, most were tommy_gun on upload. I didn't find the opposite to be true when checking tommy_gun -thompson_submachine_gun and those with both tags (3 posts) were both added at the same time.

I'm not sure what to take from that, but that's what we've got.

I didn't do it

Personally, I feel like that would be similar to tagging "Desert eagle" as "Deagle" or something.

I don't think "Thompson_submachine_gun" is as bad as "high_mobility_multipurpose_wheeled_vehicle," for instance.

But I went ahead and wrote a wiki article for both of them anyway...

I know you didn't, I looked at the tag history for all of them and it was basically 1 person who did most of it. I'm not even blaming them, it's just worth mentioning.

I wouldn't have thought that would be a shorthand name for it. TIL.

Definitely not. It might also be worth using thompson_submachine_gun just because it makes it more obvious what it is. Though I think more non-gun people know of it as "tommy gun" or "that gun that they use in gangster movies" but as long as we make an alias it shouldn't matter.

But I went ahead and wrote a wiki article for both of them anyway...

Awesome, nice job!

I think it'll be best to alias to Tommy_Gun. It's a much easier name to type out properly, even if it isn't the official name.

Compromise: thompson_gun

I rest my case

which I may have lost at this point, but still

I will concede that having "Submachine_gun" in the name is a bit redundant

Alright, that works, as long as Tommy_gun is thrown in as an alias.

I've never heard it called a Thompson gun, so I'd actually prefer tommy_gun. That gets my vote, but just because its both intuitive and short.

I have heard it simply referred to as the "Thompson" more than anything else, but that obviously wouldn't work for tagging since it's a real name.

I just figured it would be better to alias the nickname to the proper name so it wouldn't matter, but given what I said about the humvee the other day...

It's great to include the official/proper names to things, but having them be the prime tag is just going to cause way too many broken tags due to misspelling. Thompson_gun works, due to its shortness, and it's close enough that people will still think to type Tommy instead.
