Topic: Anyone know what the file size limit is?

Posted under General

Someone I know has been having trouble uploading videos lately and he's been thinking of uploading here. The problem is that he uploads high quality stuff (like REALLY high quality stuff) so I'm just wondering what the file size limit for flash videos is.

Updated

okay that's what I though. Are there any plans to raise the limit or anything?

it worked perfectly fine for me, sure it was slower but that was it.

Maybe it would be better to cut down size limit on image files, but allow larger file sizes on flashes?

Large images will be replaced with a smaller version, which may reduce image quality, but loads faster. Good for mobile devices or slow/metered internet connections.

Welp... everyones junkbox is different :p ... or it is just because of other 20 tabs... and blender..
musta been blender.

Still.. anything above 5000x5000 is slightly uhm... crazy? It laggs, it crashes the browser... and looking at a frozen screen forces people to restart..
Flashes of even larger size dont appear to have such an impact.

Maybe it would be better to cut down size limit on image files, but allow larger file sizes on flashes?

Get a graphics card that supports texture sizes upwards of 20k in either direction.
Which is basically any card released in the past 5 years.

Well he does videos, not just straight up pics. He said that one of his videos was 600mp (which is basically 1080p) and had to reduce it to 300mp to upload it.

76.1 MB transferred, loaded and rendered in 10.0 seconds. Smooth scrolling, no lag with only minor re-rendering delay. And that's with a five year old, but high end, computer and graphics card. I want to say that I'm spoiled but not sure if I really am...

Based on my tests, it's somewhere between 79.4 MB and 82.1 MB in base 10 (or 76.1 MiB and 78.3 MiB in base 2). Which means it is probably set at 80 MB. :P

I have a 2012 baseline Mac Mini with an integrated graphics chip and panning around on a trackpad is still smooth as butter.

Well that's far from ideal but I'll let him know. I might as well ask again but is there any idea of whether or not the limit might be raised at all? I do believe someone on a forum thread that they're working on it but I'm not 100% sure that's true.

We'd still like to increase it (at least for videos) since we have plenty of disk space and bandwidth to spare, it just hasn't been done yet. I don't have a timeframe to give you but the figure I keep hearing is around 300 MB (note that the exact number is still subject to change ;) ).

that reminds me, i asked NMNY about this last week when i uploaded that dick souls video and he said:

"Videos are only allowed to be in the .webm format (basically a different mp4 version) and have a theoretical file limit of 300mb, but that seems to not work right now, but anything under 100mb should work without a problem."

so yeah, it's fairly high currently but may be up to 300mb at some point.

[Feature Request] There should be an additional option to prevent animated GIFs from loading by displaying a preview of the first frame.

Videos and flash can be handled by browser content blockers, but big GIFs will always load right now.
