Topic: when to remove "tagme" from an image

Posted under General

You remove it when can't add anymore tags that are relevant to the image

really? i thought that would be a bad idea because now almost every single post on e621.net needs to be tagged with tagme. almost every post i see could have more tags added but i cant find them

Tagme can be removed after 10 or more tags are added. Its normally only used for newly uploaded images with 4 tags on them and then add tagme to it so it gets tagged

tagme can safely be removed from an image once it has the bare necessities - gender, artist, species, major body parts (anus, pussy, penis), and sexual activity or kink (scat, vaginal_penetration). Of course, we prefer more tags. But tagme doesn't really help after that, otherwise it'd be on half the tags on the site. It's mainly to identify posts that really need some tags.

If all the main things in an image has been tagged, or it has 10-15 or more tags on it, then I think the tagme can be removed. I know some people are skittish to make that judgement call. But by that point it already has more tags than half the images on this site. So unless one of the major things in it is still untagged (like a prominently shown but rare kink), I think the tagme can be safely removed.

Now, if it seems like some basic info should be recognisable but still isn't tagged, then you can use the specific tag for that: unknown_character, unknown_artist, or unknown_species. In all honesty, if that's the only thing left untagged, they otherwise just get lost in the more general "tagme" anyways. Tagme is more about populating it with more tags, especially if it had hardly any. But when it already has a dozen good tags, the more specific unknown_character/artist/species tags are a lot better than the generic "tagme" for letting people know what still is missing or needs doing.

In any case, if the major elements in a picture are tagged, and/or you can't see any additional tags that could be added, then it's probably time to take the "tagme" priority off of it. I mean, while every image could probably stand to have at least one more tag added. The practical reality is that tagging is an ongoing collaborative process. And tagme is only really for reaching a basic minimum threshold so that it's searchable for the major things going on in it.

I know what you mean though. Sometimes I'll open a tagme image and see that it basically already has everything that could possibly be tagged major AND minor. I'll add maybe one or two tags, remove the tagme and wonder if I was missing something. Especially if it's been on the site for years. But in reality there's just a lot of images and someone has to do the tagme removal sooner or later. And sometimes it's later.

If you're going to remove a tagme, add a few tags in the process, even if it has a bunch of tags. That's what's stopping us from just mass editing it out.

ok so to sum it up from all of your varying opinions (fancy talk hurt head X_X ), tagme is to be removed when there are more than 10 tags and all the important things are added

Not so much an opinion as an unwritten guideline; don't remove it without adding something to it.
