Topic: Why is there a dildo in one of the backgrounds?

Posted under Off Topic

I get we're all aware of the lewd side of the furry fandom. Well over half the art here is explicit, but given the site moderators have enforced rules based on the site not being a porn site, and the stances taken on cetain aspects... why is there a baltantly phallic present on this specific background mascot image? https://static1.e621.net/data/mascots/7500bdb80bdc353585896fa8a9aaabd3.png Yes, I did go into the page source to grab the link just to get this url lol.

Because it's giftwrapped and isn't identifiable as to what it actually is. Sure, that could be one of Bad Dragon's larger dildos, but it could also just be viewers' dirty minds jumping to the wrong conclusion and it's really a vacuum cleaner (as most of the commenters have noted). Just because something can be described as phallic doesn't mean it's a dildo or even meant to be sexual, such as skyscrapers and pencils. So, it's rated as Questionable much as many underwear bulges are rated Questionable instead of Explicit. Considering that Head Admin NotMeNotYou uploaded it and that artist Ratte generally doesn't do Explicit works, I very much doubt that the rating was chosen lightly.

Are there any rules about the appropriate content and rating for mascot images? All Most other mascot images are SFW[1], while that one that has a pretty phallic looking wrapped gift (with wrapping creases near the top that make it look like a penis head/glans, and has a couple spherical things sitting on the floor next to it), making it stand out like a sore thumb as clearly evocative of a penis and balls. The Mascots page lists it as available on "e621,e926", even though as you noted, it's rated Questionable, which is pretty weird.

[1] Although I'd question Hexerade 1, which looks like there's a slight penis outline there[2], and evalionfix, which looks like they have a visible genital_slit/cloaca/pussy.

[2] Actually Hexerade 1 does have a penis outline, as of two years ago when the tag was added and the rating changed to Explicit.

If you believe these posts have been misrated and are somehow inappropriate for the landing page, then I would suggest taking it up with NotMeNotYou as you would with any other post.

I was being genuine when I asked if there are any rules relating to mascot images. The help page doesn't seem to have anything for mascots, and it did look like the other mascots were trying to be relatively SFW (Hexerade 1 was only tagged penis_outline 2 years ago, 11 years after the image was originally posted, it is pretty subtle), which makes the Christmas mascot stand out as having rather clear phallic imagery. If it's fine, then it's fine, I have no qualms with it, just pointing out that it does stand out against the others, and the rules for mascots aren't easy to find.

Are explicit mascots even a real problem? We had post #109196 as a mascot for years before e926 came along, as far as I can remember it only got removed because it was too much effort keeping 2 separate mascot lists with the old codebase.

Granted it was a complete different staff team then, but has it really become taboo during that time? I don't see a problem as long as it's on the more "tasteful" side.

The tags say vacuum cleaner, lmao

I see it now, Ratte and NMNY totally got us with that one. That would explain why it's on both e621 and e926.

If something stands out in a group that wouldn't necessarily mean it doesn't belong in said group. It just means the available selection is filled heavily with relative SFW compared to one highly suggestive member. No one's simply gotten around to giving the apparent outlier any similar-rated friends. I suppose it would make one legitimately curious about the criteria for inclusion, though.

I don't see it as a problem, either, but I'm just a junior Janitor. I can only give my interpretation (i.e. educated guess) on why it was rated and kept in the group as it was. If I'm wrong, then NotMeNotYou is the best one to ask about it as he's the guy who actually knows what he's doing (compared to me, anyway).

There probably aren’t written, public rules for mascots because the userbase doesn't have a say in it and doesn't need to know the criteria staff uses to make those decisions. As far as I know there's also not a public branding/style guide detailing what colors and fonts should be used in logos.

I was gonna say, those are some square ass looking nuts if it is a dildo. The more I look at it, the more it looks like a vacuum.
