Do we really need this level of specificity? Simply "machine_gun" should suffice.

Yeah kinda. Heavy machine guns are BIG fuckers that go on vehicles usually, & light machine guns are basically oversized combat rifles with bullet belts. A character wielding an HMG is a very deliberate choice to show that they're massive & extremely strong.

No, we absolutely do not. The current implication chain is going to be this long: weapon --> ranged_weapon -> gun --> machine_gun --> heavy_machine_gun --> m2_browning
If we add the holding_* tags, it will be almost double the amount of tags: holding_weapon --> holding_ranged_weapon -> holding_gun --> holding_machine_gun --> holding_heavy_machine_gun
In Predator and T2 they somehow made those ridiculous scenes work. ;)

As much as I love the idea of specific guns getting their ( is that the right one for an inanimate object??) own tags I think that it would get pretty hectic pretty fast, :/
Seems sensible. I don't imagine this will ever be more than a small edge case, barring any M2 Browning memes becoming popular. Only qualm I have is with the ability and knowledge for people to tag specific weapons correctly. Honestly though, I would predict that most people liable to mistag weapons would jut tag 'gun' and call it a day.
As far as tag bloat goes, this doesn't seem like it'll affect many posts, and the bloat is linear, rather than geometric.
I don't think there will ever be a case where the delineation between "machine gun" and "heavy machine gun" will help anyone find an image they're looking for on this site.
