I think what seems to happen is artists get confused as to if a character's butt should be more feral or more anthro in appearance.

A character that's more anthro typically has the tail above the butt, sticking out perpendicular to their back, which means the anus would look out of place if you put it under the tail where it would normally go, because then you've got this massive taint between it and whatever set of genitals they have. If the character's backside is more anthro, then the anus should probably be located where it would normally be on a human.

Likewise, if the character is more feral, then the tail tends to be attached to the bottom of the back, so it's more of a "continuation" of the back, rather than an appendage attached to it. In those instances, since the tail is much lower down their backside, having an anus directly underneath it makes more sense.

Of course, if you mix up these tail/anus locations, then a post like this one is what you end up with: post #38046
