Topic: Your favorite horror movies

Posted under Off Topic

Okay, we all know that there have to be at least a few horror fans on this site. So, what movies do you guys enjoy? Here's my short list.

John Carpenter's The Thing (1982)-

This is, without a doubt, one of the best horror films ever made. Kurt Russell is an utter badass in this one and the effects are amazing.
-------------------------------------------------------
George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968)-

Without this low-budget horror flick, we probably wouldn't have The Walking Dead or any of our favorite zombie media today.
-------------------------------------------------------
George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead (1978)-

This sequel to the above film took Romero's zombie formula and perfected it. Great acting and creepy atmosphere make this an instant classic
-------------------------------------------------------
Alien (1979)-

Arguably one of the best horror films ever made, you can't go wrong with this classic and memorable flick. Great action, effects, and acting really set this one off.
-------------------------------------------------------
The Amityville Horror (1979)-

This is a perfect example of a horror film where the monster is all around the protagonists. This one is a great film, and I heartily recommend it.
-------------------------------------------------------
Poltergeist (1982)-

Scary, suspenseful, and still holding up years later. The scene where the caskets forced their way through the kitchen floor gave me nightmares for a week.

So, there are my choices. What about you guys?

Oh, I'm a big horror fan! My favourite is hard to pick though, because it depends how you're judging it...

I'm totally on board with Furballs with the original Alien. As an over-all movie it's flawless. It kinda pisses me off people give its sequel Aliens so much credit, but I'll save that for later. I can and HAVE written whole pages on why people are basically huge idiots.

I also really like The Ring and imma be a little controversial here and say the remake was actually better than the original. The Japanese version is great but it assumes its audience is already superstitious (as much of Japan is). The American version tries to inject a bit more believability into the story and I think it benefits massively for it.

While we're on jap-horrors, I'd make mention of The Grudge and Dark Water in the same breath(The Japanese version this time, in both cases). They both make fantastic use of tension and have really creative takes on a traditional ghost story. I'd say The Grudge is scarier, but Dark Water is a better movie over-all.

And I don't think any horror movie list can be complete without Cabin In The Woods.
Now, technically this is not a horror film. It's a film ABOUT horror, but it does it with infinite class and style. If you're a horror fan and you have not seen this film yet, you need to rectify this immediately. See how many horror tropes you can spot in every scene! It basically dissects each one and tries to put some logic into the bizarre realm teen horrors seem to inhabit. And it does all this while spinning a fantastically original story of its own!

Oh! And let's not forget the 1973 William Friedkin classic, The Exorcist!
One of, if not the scariest movie on my list. This film understands that fear isn't about peril, it's about tension. It wants you to empathise with its characters so when they're finally tearing their hair out and crapping their pants, you're doing the same thing. It drove an entire generation into hysteria! Truly one of the most prolific horrors of all time.

Alien, by far the most classic sci fi horror movie at least, and if I'm not mistaken they started the slogan "in space, no one can hear you scream"

The only horror movies I find irritating and not enjoyable are religious horror movies as they have no consistency and no grounds to base anything off of. I never know when to feel hopeful that something worked (9/10 it didn't work and the entity wreaks more havoc until the movie ultimately dissolves in tangent) or when I have a solid basis of...well anything really; it's too make it up as you go based on "I thought I heard" "I though I saw" type scenarios.

That said I absolutely adore 28 days later and my rented copy of 28 weeks later was all messed up but looked good

Braindead is the best religious horror. "I kick ass for the Lord!"

I think the last time a horror movie scared me, I was about 6 or 7 watching the Gremlins.

The Possession

lol

I love the SAW and Final Destination movies for the creative ways they kill people. The actual story, acting, and characters are horrible, though.
The Conjuring and Sinister were both pretty cool modern horror films.

I have a confession as a horror movie buff, though.

I like Ju-on better than The Exorcist.

I'm not really a big horror movie watcher on the account I will have nightmares for weeks I mean I got nightmares from Harry Potter for christ sake... but if I have to choose,Dawn of the dead 2004 although I do have one problem with Zombie movies,is I hate watching people being disembowled eaten,LOL I saw Zombieland and cried in like the first maybe ten mintues, they showed SO MANY people haveing there organs and tendons ripped out and eaten repeatedly I know they did this to sometimes in Dawn of The Dead, but it was far in between compaired to Zombieland

Zombieland
Cabin in the Woods
The Six Sense
Resident Evil
Shaun of the Dead
I like my "horror" movies to have something enjoyable in them, be it comedy or action, being just plain scary is boring for me...Six sense is just a great movie though...

You gotta see the Six Sense, don't let anyone tell you anything about it though...
Like it's one of those movies that's been locked in the vault for human culture in case of annihilation, for realz.
