Ponies.

From looking at the images, people used that tag for a certain oc character, some type of kissing, and.....ponies :I

I think this tag is exclusively for pony characters being paired up, so we really could do without having it....unless someone has am anthro packing peanut fetish....

Lol, if that were the case, they could call it something like "peanut_packing" or a similar alternative. "Shipping" will continue to be used as a generic term for two characters paired together romantically, which can still be found by many traditional tags for actions associated with romance, like kissing and cuddling. I say nuke it.

The term is actually a good bit older than FiM, to be fair.
It's been used in various anime fandoms, and even regular tv shows as well.
Bronies have kind of adopted it as their own thing.

It's supposed to be short for "relationshipping" or the pairing of couples of characters.

Regardless of all of that, it's a shit tag that shouldn't exist.
If it was a tag, it would have to be tagged on all images with 2 or more characters interacting in a romantic or sexual manner.

Not really, since it's a subjective concept that indicates fans shipping two characters together, which would require the material be non-canon material that includes at least one canon character paired with an OC or another canon character.

But you are okay with nuking it? I think I might actually alias it to couple, if that sounds right

That's a good idea. If I had remembered that the couple tag existed at the time of making this thread, I would have suggested it be aliased to that instead of invalid_tag.

Not at all, in show canon relationships are still "shipping".

Shipping can involve virtually any kind of relationship – from the well-known and established, to the ambiguous or those undergoing development, and even to the highly improbable and the blatantly impossible. One rule of shipping states that if more than one person ships a couple it is a rightful ship.

Edit: As an example, Castle + Beckett was shipped pretty much season 1 of Castle. It's still shipping now, even though it's a canon relationship, all it is, is short form slang for "relationship".

Yep, seems like a good idea. There's a couple of images that won't fit (such as those solo ponies), but I think it's close enough to be aliased.

Though I should mention that the couple tag is quite a mess. Too many users keep confusing it with duo, and it seems almost impossible to clean up.

....do I hear a challenge?

I've always heard it as in show canon relationships aren't shipping by default, while fans depicting the relationship in situations outside the given canonical parameters is. *shrug*

I've just always seen it used for canon pony characters but I don't get around much so my intel is surely biased in that sense

Well...not really. There's 8800+ images under 'couple -duo -group' that should be checked (and tagged with the character count). That's quite a gigantic project for any single user.
