Pillory isn't a well known word. What if we use "stockade," instead? But then if, as you suggest, people may want to use "stocks" for something besides a medieval wooden restraint, we'll have to do some tag cleaning, and people will continue to use "stocks" to mean that. I really don't know what other use we'd have for it here.

Hmm. stockade isn't correct at all though, as it's synonymous with palisade, that being a fence of wooden stakes, though it does have a secondary meaning of a jail-like structure formed by said stakes; either way, I don't think the intent is to render it to mean a military fortification.
The reason I suggested a reverse alias is because if they add stocks and they mean an alternate meaning, and they see pillory appear in the tag list, they will be more inclined to examine why, and hopefully replace the tag as appropriate. I will acknowledge though that it is used as a synonym of pillory most commonly from a brief glance through the images, so it can be assumed that anyone using the tag at current is meaning to tag a pillory, so I don't see much of an issue arising from aliasing it to pillory.
As for it being well know, I don't see a reason to avoid a word because people are lowering their knowledge of language as the generations continue. It's not a word said in common conversation, but then neither is stocks in that meaning, unless you educate yourself to the topic at hand, in which case pillory should be a known factor. Note I'm writing this on 4 hours sleep for the past 48 hours or so, so.

Bah, you're totally right about "stockade," my mistake. I guess I have no preference for the direction of the alias.

Going to alias it the way it is suggested
