Some of the mega evolutions look significantly different than the base forms, and I'm not convinced that someone who searches for e.g. charizard wants to also see the mega evolution forms. I certainly don't, and it's hassle to have to throw in -mega_charizard for the searches, especially with the tag limit. And it'll only get worse if/once they add more mega evolutions.

What's the benefit from mixing those up under the same tag? I think they'd work better as separate tags.

I support the idea of removing the mega_[pokémon] -> [pokémon] implications and from what I've seen it sounds like most of us either support removing them or are indifferent, but I wanted to ask people's opinions before I actually did anything.

Benefits (of keeping the implications):

  • Less manual cleanup needed when people tag both
  • More in line with the pokédex
  • Implications are fairly straightforward

Drawbacks:

  • No way to search for both mega_diancie and diancie in the same post
  • Many look significantly different than their base forms (as Genjar mentioned)

Currently implied:

Not implied:

Many, I will manually go through these when a decision is made. I will be implying mega_evolution to all of them either way.

Perhaps, if we kept the implication, we could tag pictures of non-mega Pokémon that can mega-evolve with something like "pokemonname_(non-mega)" and have that imply "pokemonname" separately. But I don't know.

Absol tag attached to mega absol tag and simple absol tag.
Searching for absol gives both. Searching for mega or simple gives you what you want. Nice solution...

Would have to make a tagging project whenever new mega evolution comes up though.

It'd also be quite bothersome to do so with the stock we have now... Especially since some of the most popular pokemon we have have megas.

Nay/slightly indifferent.
Generally enjoy seeing both normal and mega while just searching for that pokemon. (no, they don't look all that different..)

Nope, many of them look completely different.
Especially Mewtwo, Charizard (X version), Alakazam, Slowbro, Salamence, Latias and Latios.

Heck, there's more difference between Mega Pidgeot and Pidgeot, than Pidgeot and Pidgeotto. But the first two are implicated while the other two aren't.

And again, it's like implicating flamedramon to veemon, or tagging feral WoW druids as elves. Mega forms may evolve from the base forms, but that's outside information. We should only be tagging what's currently visible, instead what they normally look like.
