Topic: why people like bad art?

Posted under Art Talk

This topic has been locked.

Welcome to Deviantart where bad artists get a lot of traction and good artists get nothing.

Im sure this has to be happening to another artist but after finding a person on this website through the forums and looking at their posts, I decided I wanted to look at their DA account because often times artists sell stuff off there, offer requests and so forth.

I pick this artist because its the best example I have, and because its easy to find another artist to compare this to because of the genre being my little pony.

The first artist I want to talk about is the guy who drew this:
http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2014/075/8/2/nm_by_aetherstar-d7aha32.png

I want to know, how does anyone find this appealing? Im about to be very rude but Im also about to speak the truth.

This is shit, the anatomy is absolutely horrendous, its done on MS paint with lines that overlap and its absolutely HORRIBLE. Bottom line, its BAD. And people like it! They have 19 watchers and over 300 favs.

This is the artist that made me frustrated enough to bring up this topic: I found them because they mentioned DA in the forums here and I checked out their art from there. And you people are right DA is shit because this persons art is good! Its clean and fresh and just looks really nice, but they have no watchers and 1 favorite. Granted they dont have as many posts there as here but still come on people this is a good artist how are you not interested in this. Its not like they have not advertised themselfs because they offered 3 times now for free drawing requests, 1 person took up on it.

The artist name is: Cutedementia

No doubt some of you know him. (I say him because of the way he speaks in the forums under the bad dragon discussion, talking about male toys like the enquine rump) Because(he?) Seems rather active in the forums.

Here is -his- stuff.
https://e621.net/post/index/1/cutedementia

And he's good, The community here seems to agree because they give him about 3 or so likes every posts and a couple favs depending on the content. But on Deviantart he's completely ignored. 0 watchers, 2 favorite. 53 pageviews. That right there is pathetic, this is a good artist and he's being completely ignored by the DA community and that is incredibly frustrating to see that. I cant draw for shit, a lot of people cant. But how can they be ignored like that?

Someone explain why people are not following artist like Dementia and many many other artist that are ignored like this. (I cant give many examples but there are some really really good artist that are also flat out ignored) But follow people with no talent what so ever. Someone explain this I dont understand!

1) Don't* It's* Can't*
>Some grammar helps people take you more seriously.

2) Why use me as an example? Yea it's true I get ignored on DA but I'm from the pony fandom DA is a big place.

(The posts it recommends to you is entirely based on the last picture you looked at, not the history of posts you've looked at)

3) Some of those stats are wrong, but in tiny ways so don't worry about it. (60 page views, 3 favs)

And you decided to talk about this specific user/artist because of...?

Well I saw them posting on the forum asking about Deviantart. And I found them talking on several other posts so I finally decided to look at their stuff and followed the trail to DA where I promptly got frustrated.

I don't want to really uh... Represent a rant on how shitty the judgement of a websites community is... Did you post this anywhere else?

Where did you look at exactly? The "More like this" section usually gives bad results

I don't entirely appreciate you calling someone's art bad. It's an opinion, and I can promise you that he draws better than I do.

If you don't like it, don't follow it. In a world of Justin Beibers, Duck Dynasty, and Honey Boo-Boos, there are going to be things that you may not like that other people do.

In retrospect, what you could do with your energy is promote who you feel is a good artist and increase their visibility. This method you've chosen is still promoting CuteDementia while still giving no attention to the others.

Tho I do have to agree with the OP in terms of the artist he/she is criticizing, the anatomy is in fact completely off. But I don't want to have my name on a thread that's main focus is shitting on another artist, no matter how bad they are.

The what section?

The what section?

When you view an image in dA, on the right-hand side of the page, there are several sections:

Send note, Share on Facebook, tumblr, twitter, etc
Add to favorites
Download (some don't have it)
More from this artist
More from dA
etc etc etc

So wait the difference between our numbers is literally one digit?

And that would be? I use Tor Browser so I'm not sure why my IP is even listed. (Perhaps I use it wrong?)

Tor connects to many computers, no matter how hard you try, an IP will be always registered

I joined to post this, clearly. But I found out quickly that you cant make a forum post before you have been signed up for 3 days. Hence the date of joining.

Seems my suggestion of dementia as the main focus of this post has met with friction not sure why but whatever. I guess every community has its internal fights, would you like me to suggest another artist?

You should look up how the internet traffic works, IP addresses ARE needed to be able to receive packets, Tor just sends the packets through a network of different connections, where each connection only knows two jumps at most, the IP we see from a Tor user is the IP of the last jump in the line.

I know nothing about IP addresses I only hear from time to time they can be used to find where a person lives. I don't know, this isn't my area computers have never been my thing I just know how to work the programs on them. So if the closeness of the 2 IP's has any seriousness to it could you explain?

Already said why. You two share IP's. So either he is sneaking into your room and using your computer when you aren't looking, or

And what exactly are you emplying? Im sure theres dozens of reasons our IP's could be close, I have a proxy program on my Mac that works the same as tor should in terms of hiding your regular up address that seems logical to me.

You can't, only admins can to search for ban evaders/trolls

If only it could show mac addresses, would be better then relying on ip.

We need a middleman for this (preferably an admin). Both users should go to a site that shows their IP (such as http://whatismyip.org - don't post them here) and PM that to the middleman

Edit: Now that I think about it, this sounds like a crazy idea...

Meaning you're registering on the same router. Ie same house. Ie same person. Give it up, we understand you're just venting that shitty artists get more coverage than you; we understand your frustration. Most of us do anyway. Just drop the charade and let this thread did.

I already said something along the same lines when I asked about the opinions people here had on DA like 2 weeks ago. I'm still confused what this IP thing means. Does it mean we have the same internet provider or something? What makes us connected exactly?

IP: Internet Protocol

It's analogous to your home address. These numbers determine city, state, and other stuff I can't remember...

And it's not possible for someone to have a similar IP and this could just be coincidence? Come now there are millions of internet connections around the world there must be similar IP's somewhere?

Sometimes, and this is very rare, IP addresses will match from different users, that were active years apart

LookAnotherLeftTurn said:

No, that is how it works most of the time. The last sequence usually constitutes your device, and the second last sequence is often the router/network you are on. So if the entire sequence matches except the last digit, you may be accessing the site from computer A and computer B

Our IP tracker just shows the IP posting the information to the site, and is as reliable as IP addresses themselves, which is not 100% a reliable thing

Still not quite right :P In the vast majority of residential cases, your network (i.e. anything in the house) just gets one IP, not one IP per computer. And two people who have the same ISP can certainly get two addresses that are almost identical.

Anyway, we shouldn't be using IP address similarities to point and laugh at people...

Oh yeah, I was talking from the router, as in my router also assigns user access based on the number it gives each device, which is my IP address plus 01, 02, 03, for each device, but at any rate, IP addresses can be very similar and sometimes even identical, and that does not always mean ban evader. That being said too, most of the time it is a ban evader just using a different network in the same area
