Topic: e621 actually catalogues deleted images

Posted under General

Easy to restore stuff if someone ever decides to get of dnp list, and others.

Because there's a difference between deleted and actually deleted (destroyed)

Yeah, they never really delete images. The admins just hide them from public view.

They're kept so they can possibly be restored at a later date, tags and other information are kept along with the image. Illegal content and stuff like that will be destroyed, meaning the image and all traces (at least to the public viewer) are gone.

Also, if it's DNP you probably shouldn't be posting the link to it.

Evidently, "deleted" images on e621 are just not publicly accessible (i.e., members of certain status can still view them); however, that blocked access does not seem to include direct URLs to the deleted images. The images are stored "for reference" and to prevent duplicate uploads, even though only the hash should be required. I'm pretty certain it's a standard practice.

[REDACTED] (Let's not be teaching users how to circumvent the deletion system. -ippiki)

As someone with education in IT security, this would concern me if I worked for... Dragonfruit, I guess? Once this unintended access is officially acknowledged, the administration may need to adequately address the issue to avoid potential legal consequences with DMCA or equivalent non-compliance, not that this will ever become an issue. I'm just speculating since I don't particularly know those laws, how they apply to furry art, and e621's legal takedown responsibilities. I very generally alluded to this when it was brought up before.

We are looking into this now.

Damn, well it was fun while it lasted. At least we have google cache to see what image was deleted so we're never stuck wondering, even though we can't download the image.

Deleted images are kept on file and hidden from public view (the direct URL should be blocked though)

We keep them soft deleted so that we have accountability of what was deleted and it also serves to block future identical uploads and helps us restore content when it is okay to do so.

Posts can also be destroyed, that is to say completely purged from the system, but that is only done in rare cases where the material itself is absolutely unacceptable to store such as cp and malware

That makes sense.
