Topic: WTF, e621?

Posted under General

So, this has been bugging me for a week now.

I keep finding pictures that don't load. The thumbnail is fine, but when I click the thumbnail, e621 shits itself and doesn't load the picture.

When I checked the errors on the dev console on this one, it had this error;

The page at 'https://e621.net/post/show/193789/abdominal_bulge-all_fours-anal-anal_penetration-bi' was loaded over HTTPS, but displayed insecure content from 'http://e621.net/post/md5redirect?id=b00689df71f397b743f6311a4bc8bd82': this content should also be loaded over HTTPS.

Does anyone else have this problem? And does anyone have any clue as to what's going on?

I could tag all the broken ones I find, if that will help.

It loads fine for me. This has happened to me before but not as much as you

Yep, that's been happening a lot recently. I already bug reported it yesterday.

About one image in fifty is broken. I haven't had this problem before, it started a few days ago.

Updated by anonymous

I've been having this problem every now and then. Right now everything works fine (dammit, every time I want to prove a malfunction, it just fixes itself, same with the car :/ )

Oh, other thing I've been noticing lately is that thumbnails appear a bit more compressed (show more artifacts)

Updated by anonymous

All links work flawlessly for me.

I had that problem a day or two ago, though, but it seems to be gone now.

I think it's user-sensitive, or that one is fixed. I can see that one one, but not, say, this one:

That's odd. I even tried it with multiple browsers: doesn't show up for me with either Firefox or Chrome, so it shouldn't be a caching problem.

https://e621.net/post/show/297755/big_breasts-breasts-cum-cum_on_chest-dovahkiin-dra is an another one that doesn't work for me. As I mentioned earlier, about one image in fifty refuses to load.

All working for me but the one I originally posted :S

IE10 doesn't happen. IE9 - doesn't happen to me either. CHrome, happened once.
Mmm, browser's protocol or implementation?

May be some plugin, QuickTime, download manager, something else?

I am use the old "Opera Classic" for Android, by the way. Haven't tried it on the PC.

I have the same issue on both. Some images will load and some just won't. I think it's a server problem. Maybe because of what tony said...

The one in the OP works for me, but not the others linked so far. However, all but https://e621.net/post/show/398665 worked for me using Tor. In fact, that was the first one that hasn't worked among the broken posts I've tried in Tor. I thought HTTPS Anywhere would help my main browser, but no dice.

Main browser is Waterfox 27. Tor is version 3.5 (first stable build after Tor's overhaul; not most current).

Since it hasn't been said yet, I will just add that some posts with a broken main page (i.e., see tag text in place of picture) still let me download the full-sized picture when I click Download. Likewise, some posts viewable on their main pages cannot be viewed at full size, which includes trying View Original, Full Size, and Download buttons. This of course means that I am using the resize and sample options under my User Settings. Naturally, some posts just do not work at all for me.

I noticed these issues only after e621's spat of downtime a few days ago.

Can confirm, getting a ton of images not loading. Although the ones posted in this thread do load for me.

The only solution I've found is to copy the download link and change https to http.

Updated by anonymous

So given these problems seem to come from a https error, why IS e6 https? Not like there's credit card info on here... Is there?

Updated by anonymous

was going to make a thread about this then saw one already here...certainly an obscure bug, eh? seen lots of pics doing this seemingly randomly in recently.

and looking through this thread, noone seems to know the cause of the problem yet.

Updated by anonymous

Probably is because of this

tony311 said:
It's because we switched our IP and it's just taking a few days for some people's/ISP's DNS caches to update.

Though he refers to UK blocking e621 for some users

Edit: I got a weird 522 error that was outside of e621 (DNS Provider perhaps?)

Ok. I've looked over a few of the "broken" pics and might have a solution for some of you. Some animated post require Adobe Flash to work. Make sure the device you use has or supports Adobe Flash. Hope this helps someone.

We know some posts are occasionally temporarily broken, it's not permanent and you don't have to report every one. :P

Is a fix underway or will our ISP's eventually figure it out?

I use e621 while I'm browsing with my iPad on Safari.
I get pictures that are relatively small in size (<1 MB) but I get a little blue question mark on the image. Wierd.

I too am having trouble seeing images on my Nexus 7. I can see the thumbnails just fine though.

Here are two more. Was going to put as bug in the bug thread, but its better to confirm if anyone else can't see those after reading what's written here.

https://e621.net/post/show/328681/

https://e621.net/post/show/106765/

Both images(Download link) for me are redirecting to the MD5 URL version of the image. As if there was some problem maybe with either the md5 or hotlink protection systems(normally hotlink does forward "unauthorized" hotlinking to the post if i'm not mistaken?)

Either way, it seems that, as other have said, replacing the https with http in the "download link" does works as workaround.

Information: It does seems that is affected by the username! just tried browsing the pictures i said above as a private browsing (e.g. logged out) and it does load!

Indeed, just tested that. I logged out and was able to see the picture without problems.
Although i was unable to use the download link. It still redirected me to the same post, but i was able to check that the "sample" image did worked.

Got it. Indeed the "sample" image does work. It works if i'm logged in or out(when logged out, and having the image loaded, open it in a new tab, and then log in again and refresh the image) The reason that the post works when i'm logged off it is because it is showing me the sample image, and when i login it shows the full image. The full image for me at these two posts does not work if i'm logged in or out.

Possibly confirmed tied to username/ip. i was able to browse the normal and sample versions of most of the posts in here.

To everyone having problems, please try logging out from your account and accessing the same post you are having the problem, then try downloading it and sees if the original image does load or you are redirected independently if you are logged in or out.(the picture must be pointing to sample to work) If the sample picture doesn't work then i quit.

Well, there is still one solution that can show every picture, just take the direct link and edit it to http: instead of https:, annoying but possible.

Doesn't seem work with Chrome. It just redirects to https:...
Edit: ...oh, wait. You mean the image url? Yep, that works.

This issue should have been fixed as of a half hour ago. If it's still happening, be sure to clear out your cache and cookies, and even refresh your DNS.

If still down, let us know!

Still been having trouble, even after clearing the DNS, cache, browsing history, and just about anything else Chrome gives the option of clearing.

the static server is not liking the referer engine. Therefore it's forwarding it to the post engine, which of course sees that this isn't a request for a post and 404s; the cloud flare redirect is set up very incorrectly (change any link to end in jpg). No it's not fixed.

in logged in state those works for me WITH https in URL (IE10 browser). Chrome works too, but SSL's "lock" icon in address srting shows some yellow triangle - I don't know what that means, some of warning there? Triangle disappears when I open Download link.

Just to confirm those are same links:
https://static1.e621.net/data/09/f0/09f060c3d4bb6ccc14e51a70ee6644c2.png
https://static1.e621.net/data/47/40/4740c1eeb95bd89958fd37fe2aff1d2e.png

I'm starting to suppose that it might have something with updated or modified security settings

ok, I checked what that warning is.. it's warning about fact that connection uses 128-bit encryption, but received resoures are unencrypted. TLS 1.2 protocol used. Certain security settings may fully discard that resource (the picture) then

That resource is actually the ad on the page, not the image (check the developer console). If it was the image, then the direct link wouldn't use https:// protocol.

As for what is causing this problem, I don't know. It seems to be completely connection specific. Maybe the IP change wasn't as smooth as it should've been. I remember not being able to reach the site for about 3 hours. Then I had these problems with a few images not willing to show themselves. But now I seem to have no problems at all. So... Weird.

Hey guys.

I swore I had responded to this thread after my last post, but I guess I didn't.

So it is fixed, but it still needs to be pushed live. Jumped the gun, sorry about that. I have paid the goblins some extra mithril and they shall rush to the mad wizard so that he can fix our problems once and for all!

Translation: I'm on it.

https://e621.net/post/show/20061

Right click on Download, copy the target URL ("Copy Link Location" in Firefox), paste the URL into the address bar, change the https:// to http:// and press Enter.

These are for the images you can't open via HTTPS for the time being:

Okay, we don't need any more reports, we're aware of the issue and reporting images that are broken is pointless since it affects random images, and only temporarily, and not even for the same people :P

Also, the problem is 100% on our end, there's nothing you need to change about privacy, browser, or firewall settings or anything.

As some people have pointed out, you can still view broken images by copying the image URL (right-click on the "Download" link and copy URL/address) and pasting it into your address bar. If that still doesn't work, try changing https to http.

Updated by anonymous

Had problems too. I fixed it for myself by deactivating wot (web of trust). If I enable an adblocker I have problems too.

Updated by anonymous

I get tons of pictures that don't load. Then again, I'm a weirdo who like to multi-tab so I don't have to leave a source page.
Although, I haven't really had this problem until recently.
