Topic: How do you view pencil drawings?

Posted under Art Talk

Now of course pencil is not even close to being a major tool used on this site. I'm willing to bet more then 95% of this sites image creation tools are digital based.

However there are some people who use pencil now and then. (Me being one of them)

How do you view pencil drawings? Does drawing in pencil make you -less- professional? Does it make the drawings look too messy?

I ask because I just started a comic with Celestia/Discord that I'll be doing all in pencil. And actually every drawing you will see if you look at my page is always originally made in pencil. I then take a picture, bring it to my computer. And go over it with my drawing program. (With a mouse)

I can't use my tablet for the life of me, so I'm stuck with this method. But I often like my pencil creations better then my mouse based ones.

What do you think of this? (Not just my drawings, but others as well. Feel free to provide examples for your response)

Long as its good and I can see it as well as the scan of the pencil work being very clear then I would approve it.

If you're doing pencil work and you want it to look good, you're almost definitely going to need access to a scanner for it. You can sort-of fix up pencil art taken with a very good camera, but it's still not going to look great unless you've got a scanner.

I have a very good one, but I doubt walking in with 12 explicit pictures of Pinkie pies ass will be acceptable.

I view pencil art like any other art (I'm a traditional dude too, never got used to digital). A scanner is a MUST HAVE. Lighting, positioning, and angles becomes a factor when you try to take pics and most of the time it's difficult

you might want to invest on a personal scanner then, they aren't that expensive. 30-50 bucks for a mid quality canon

Again, I have a very good one in my house. The problem is that it sits right next to where my dad works.

"Hey dad can I scan this picture of Twilight presenting her ass? No? Okay what about Pinkie making out with Fluttershy? Still out of line? Oh, I know! How about Lyra licking Bon Bon's cutie mark? That's a little less explicit

Mostly by bringing the focus of my eyes in line with picture in question, and then just making sure that I don't have my eyes closed (that happens all the time, like all 10 seconds).

...smart assery aside, I like sketches and pencil drawings, as long as the image quality is good, which means exactly what the others said, pick up a scanner somewhere or get your father out of the room before you scan.

There are solutions for phone cameras, but those require extensive knowledge about proper lighting and are generally not worth the time to invest in / set up.

Might just be me but maybe you should wait to post your cartoon horse porn until you're not living with your dad.

Nahhhhhh, my mom's actually seen my anthro stuff. She says I draw boobs well.

Now we need proof, have your mother "distract" your father and scan that shit.

Actually, sometimes I prefer unfinished (mostly-)pencil versions to their finished colored versions because the pencil work suggested more potential than the colored version revealed. If the pencil work and subject are agreeable, then I don't usually care about how good the finished version might look. I just don't like really messy lines and rough shapes.

I mean, ecmajor is quite good with that style, right?

I am fully supportive of pretty much every medium in art. Most of my work is in pencil. Never got very good at coloring by hand, so I just practiced grey-scale shading.

It's only recently I've started really trying my hand at digital coloring. I've still got a lot left to learn though, and pencil is still where I'm most comfortable.
