Topic: Okay, I gotta ask. What does e621 mean?

Posted under General

Why make a yiff website, and call it something you'd find at the bank as part of a fourteen segment security code?

I've been curious about this for the longest time.

It's the number for msg. So the site is meant to be an addictive flavor enhancer for your life.

I've always liked the name. I might not have joined up/felt comfortable here if it was called yiffyclop.murr or something.

It deters anyone using my computer from thinking that it's a porn site. e621 means nothing to the average person, as opposed to "PornHub".

But there are two flaccid, tiny penises in the name.

I always call the site "flavor enhancer" when I talk about it out loud.

The problem with that argument is that the modern answer to "I don't know what that is." isn't "Oh well, I guess I'll never know.".
It is "Hmm, let me google that."

Guess what you get when you google e621.

May be it's why they temporaly banned site in Russia? e621 is now "officially" harmful substance (from april), and there was something about propaganda regulations, lol

Though if they did, it means that those people lost last brains (if they had any)

As much as the whole MSG thing is probably true, I really choose to believe another theory.
A while back it was a pretty standard rule at any Con that for everyday you spend at Con, you get (at least) 6 hours of sleep a night, 2 meals a day, and shower at least 1 time a day.
It just transferred over to the furry fandom
I think I remember answering this question numerous times as well.

Huh. That is thoroughly NOT what I was expecting. I do see the appeal of this being more low key, though.

And this would make sense, too. Or perhaps it's really a mixture of both.

Regardless, my mind is blown. Thanks to all who responded!

Wrong! It decodes into "penis"

A name doesn't make the site, the site makes the name. :P Which is true of just about anything I suppose, really. The name doesn't HAVE to be directly related to the product, but it can help. Example: car names/brands. A notable example is how Carroll Shelby came up with the names for the Mustang GT350 and GT500: http://driving.ca/auto-news/news/automotive-etymology-how-cars-got-their-names

After a lengthy debate, Shelby became disgruntled because he saw the discussion going nowhere. He asked someone to go out and measure the paces between his office and a neighboring building. When the distance turned out to be 350 paces, the name GT350 was born and it stuck.

The legendary GT500 was named in a similarly bizarre fashion. It’s rumored that Shelby simply wanted the biggest number on the side of a car. As Chevrolet already had 427 and MoPar had 440 on their cars, he felt that naming his car with a “500″ would put it at the top of the heap.

The product is what makes the name memorable, not necessarily the other way around.

I like all of these answers, and I feel smarter having read this thread. I had no idea what an E-number was beforehand.
