Because "being a furry" isn't really something that needs clarification in the first place, and if you clarify that you're a furry it tends to get on peoples nerves and is a cue for the trolls to get rollin'.

If you don't clarify in the first place and just kinda do your thing without drawing attention to yourself AS a furry, then you'll likely avoid getting teased for BEING a furry.

Find 50,000 people who agree with you and march down Times Square or something demanding recognition. Maybe you'll at least get the support of the LGBT community.

Note that the rainbow marches haven't stopped homophobes or other bashers of the LGBT lifestyle, so I wouldn't expect anything to stop regarding furries, either.

Just 'cuz someone shits on you on some Internet website for being a furry, and tells you to commit suicide, etc...it doesn't mean you have to get your fur ruffled about it and act like a little kid (unless you really are one). If you're good at making witty comments, throw a few back at them (aka "trolling the trolls") and turn something negative into something positive.

Really, the only times that I ever let on that I'm a furry is when I'm prepared for a ribbing, and I just give as good as I get. Try not to take it personal and try not to rub it in the faces of people who openly don't like your taste in art.

You don't have have to tell the you're furry. You do have that option.

Think about it:

"hey guys, I'm a furry" isn't too different from "Hey guys, I'm a compuer geek" or "hey guys, I'm a cheerleader" or "hey guys, I'm the quarterback for my football team".

each statement gives you an impression of a person--a glimpse of a sterotype, if you will. It's not so much that you're judging the person, so much as that you're making a first impression. All you have, in that initial instant, is 'furry' to go off of. perhaps "proudly furry". and you hear about everything you'd heard about furries. And that is applied to the person talking in an instant. Even if the rest of the words said basically say "and I'm into all the same things you are, and like what you like and we'd be great friends otherwise' ... you still have that first flash impression--furry.

furry's been 'ruined' by a few visible, vocal people. and by many many other people who start bawling about fursecution , or perpetuating stereotypes ("So there I was yiffing my mate--he's so murry-when the phone rings and.." to near complete strangers!)

Its' okay to be furry, it's okay to be proud.

But don't make it your opening statement. no one needs to know. jsut like no one NEEDs to know your'e gay, into scat, a hermaphrdote or whatever.

Let your first impression be "hi I'm a new guy. I like the look of this place so I hope we'll get along!" ... if you wanna bring up furry, bring it up later while engaging in an APPROPRIATE discussion. then. and even then. it never hurts to gage the waters first like you might if you were gay. (mention the questionable topic and see how peopel react. If they're horrible about it... don't bring it up.

no one needs to know your bowel movements.
No one needs to know what your favoite songs, every year were.
No one needs to know that you have bad gas.

simple as that. :) furry's not a disgusting thing, but some things you just shouldn't bring up in potentially mixed (not furry) company.

Good point. We are able to choose the information we share about ourselves. The questions we should ask are: How much is appropriate to share, and are we prepared for the repercussions of sharing it?

Seems like a good deal of people (all people, not just furries) don't ask either one.

TC I doubt anybody cares that you're a furry on a forum. They probably just care about how god damn sensitive you are on the internet and take advantage of it.
