If memory serves, it's standing order to use the real name of the artist and have all their aliases alias to their real names, since the real name is stable and consistant while they may go through three or four or more aliases in the time they are an artist.

This is absolutely not the case anymore. It's an incredible violation of privacy for our tagging system to basically serve as a method of figuring out what an artist's real name is based off their aliases. I've had many takedown requests come my way specifically because the artist was quite upset that e621 was using their real name instead of their alias.

As far as I'm concerned, an artist's real name should never be used on this site unless that is how the artist has decided to represent himself or herself online.
