Hey folks,

I've got the mascot changer working on the homepage now; I've added a few of the mascots from the previous competition to the rotation and would appreciate feedback (maybe even bug reports) on these.

If you have any requests for additional mascots you'd like to see in rotation, please mention it in this thread and provide a link to the image in question!

Hope you enjoy this new addition to the site - and I'm sorry it took me so long to get this set up and change it from Dylan.

I believe we're still waiting on artwork of Hexerade from Chizi. I don't think he ever got it to us.

thank god finally. this was done super fast, so i understand, but will this also affect other pages besides the front page? i rarely touch it so i wouldn't enjoy it.

That's the idea, yes. Just hasn't been implemented yet, nor am I sure that we have the artwork yet for the other pages.

They were doing a pretty good job of hiding Dylan's dongle with the SEARCH/POSTS bar so I don't see this being much of an issue.

also, post #64032 is pretty good for a Hexerade picture.

and as one... MINOR of MINOR quibble... two of the current 'back' images feature lighter colored hexagons floating through space in some manner... while the other two do not. I'd be nice of the theme could be carried along to the other two, if only loosely :) but, as said, this is the most minor of quibbles.

Easiest solution, get all mascots as transparent PNGs and just paste them onto background :D

When I first heard you guys were going to incorporate several mascots, I was wondering how you'd be able to pull it off.

I like Dylan just fine, but I do like the mascot changer more. It'll be nice when (if?) more images are added to it, too.

On a somewhat unrelated subject; wasn't there supposed to be a second image of Dylan that would be released? I'm sure a few of us are still waiting...

Is there anyone else it isn't working for? I get no mascots at all on the front page in both Opera and Safari on OS X. I think I used to get the armadillo on there fine before this was set up.

There should be a two buttons underneath the search bar. "Search" and "Change Mascot". Press the second one and it'll cycle through the current list. I believe the site keeps your last used one in a cookie or something, but I have yet to test that.
I'm glad this has been done, for several reasons. In the middle of the pack there was the fact that we're over 7% of the way to the next hundred thousand, so the party hat was a bit old.

I think that if anyone wants to make their own version of the e621 mascot, they can. If the owner (or whoever is in charge of the mascots) likes the mascot, they can put it in rotation with the others

Oh well duh!, I didn't even see that. (Guess my mind thought it was a "I'm feeling lucky" button, hurr.) Not sure about the cookie though; on page reload it goes back to no mascot for me.

I was actually expecting a 'random mascot on page load' thing, so that's why I assumed it didn't work. I think it'd be a good idea to add something like this.

It's nice, but Dylan was just fine. -shrugs-

Though as for the changer as it is now, the shark was definitely a favorite of mine.

Pretty sure that's the default unless you change it, though there's really no way of going back to it. Try deleting the cookie the site created for you and reloading the home page. Every time I've brought up the home page without a cookie, it's been no mascot at all.

Except it turned out that with some browsers/systems/screen resolutions - and particularly if you had anything other than regular 100% zoom enabled - this wasn't always the case. So, face fulla armadillo wang right on the homepage.

The default is indeed a blank background, and I kinda like it that way. Very efficient, somewhat googlesque, but not entirely bare because there's the counter at the bottom. Could a blank image be added to the rotation?

Also there doesn't seem to be a 100% colour match between the image background and the page for some reason. I don't know if it's just my browser (plain old Firefox 3.7.something I think?) or my colour settings (window is currently on laptop's secondary external monitor, highest colour depth (24 bit? 32? whatever...) with some brightness/colour temp/gamma tweaks to make it sort-of match the internal screen). however i still don't see how that should lead to a visible seam between the edge of the image and the page background. The suggestion to make them as PNGs with transparency sounds good - maybe make it fade out from fully opaque around the mascot itself, to fully transparent a pixel or two from the edge of the image? Should be fairly trivial to effect in P****shop...

as for the thing with the coloured hexagons, perhaps it could be layered up, or just have a tiled background featuring them, and the main mascot transparently sitting on top? or have the background independently changeable instead? or just stay with the transparent fadeout theme. I'm not particularly bothered by them - I spend hardly any time hanging out on the homepage anyway ;-)
