Not all loincloths are used as underwear. Underwear implies that it is something typically worn beneath other clothing (what you wear). Loincloths are, for the most part, worn without another piece of clothing over them, usually meant for warmer climates or hot workplaces, such as mine- or foundry-work.

Why was this implication made in the first place?
