I'm tempted to revert it all back to lauren_faust_(mlp), but Riversyde is an admin, so I'm asking here first.

I vote it should be reverted to (mlp), since it's not inconceivable that Lauren Faust may be drawn in more than just as a MLP character.

I could force the hand by uploading her self-portrait, but it'd be somewhat off-topic for site.

On hindsight though, a duo tag of lauren_faust_(character) and ponification would also work admittedly.

Yeah, this is why I put it with a _(character) suffix and ponification instead of _(mlp) because Lauren is not, as far as I know, actually ever featured in the show.

If _(mlp) means "featured in the show", should Nyx be nyx instead of nyx_(mlp) because it's a character from a fanfic and not the show itself? Same question about Elusive and other gender swaps of the main cast and other OC ponies.

Gender swaps based off featured ponies get their character tag + crossgender.
Ponies from fanfics get fan_character and my_little_pony. They do not get any suffix, unless required.

By the way, anyone know why did the _(mlp) suffix start in the first place? Why not just twilight_sparkle, rainbow_dash, etc.?

I guess it started before FiM, since there are lots of ponies were already named after common terms like Applejack, Rarity, Firefly, and Surprise that would require that level of differentiation. When some people saw so many MLP characters with suffixes they probably assumed that all the characters needed it.

Because ponies. I think I was the one that started the tag, but it's been so long and my memory is admittedly hazy, so I don't really remember all that well. I know I continued to propagate it, considering the names of a lot of characters were rather common, and it kept it separated from any instances of a character or subject that was not MLP related. It really helps separated the MLP stuff from the rest of it to keep it segregated away from the average whiner. Plus, when mutliple images can be tagged with a name, having it preset as _(MLP) means that it doesn't need to be cleaned up from the other character(s)/articles that apply (Surprise for example).
