Topic: Tag Alias: chinese_dress -> cheongsam

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

I'm gonna say this is a Bad Idea®. I don't even know what a cheongsam is, and I don't think many other users do either.

You dont need to. Thats what aliases are for. You search chinese_dress and get cheongsams. Easy.
Right now we have all 3: chinese_dress, cheongsam and quipao, and while they mean same thing, different pictures are tagged with different names for this thing.

I mean, sure it's technically more accurate, but I don't really see the reasoning behind it. It doesn't seem like it would be an improvement.

At first I was kinda for it, but thinking about it, I gotta agree with Ippiki and Riversyde. It doesn't really seem like it'd be productive...

Usually common terms win out over silly weird more 'accurate' terms, in my mind. Not everyone here speaks fluent Chinese.

the chingchongsam thing -> chinese dress one seems okay, but why alias stetson when there is literally nothing tagged for it?

Well then, lets alias cheongsam to chinese dress then so people aren't confused about the tag.

I support this. Had I seen the cheongsam tag, I would have assumed it was a name or something.

Could we also alias stetson to cowboy hat?

Especially considering that a Stetson is a specific brand of cowboy hat.

Most well known cowboy figures wore cowboy hats, that are generally made by Stetson. Many people call any cowboy hat a Stetson.

Thx. Now add qipao => chinese_dress as well, cause cheongsam and quipao are synonyms.

Also, i dont uderstand you guys. You dont call tiramisu an italiant_dessert, tequila a mexican_vodka (and vodka as russian_alcohol) etc. You use proper names for these things. Cheongsam and quipao are no different. Only because you don't know proper names does not mean you should use your own when referring to these things. That's not convenience, that is arrogance.
Just learn them. That's not so hard (learning is magic) - its just 2 words.

edit: oh yea. Lets not forget Kimonos. Lets call them japanese_dress then, that would be totally ok.

But there's nothing tagged with quipao.

We call them tiramisu and etc instead of italian_dessert and that because that's how we learned to refer to them as. You say we are like this because we haven't learned how to refer to them when it's the complete opposite.

They're kimonos. No alias is needed.

Fine. You've got your alias.

Ok i made a huge comment that was seeping with sarcasm (regarding (my perception of) quoted comment) but that would be ungrateful and would probably get me banned.
So i'll just say "thanks" and "keep up the good work, love the site".

Thanks!

We don't punish people for having opinions, as long as they're honest and not hate-driven. Say whatever you feel you need to.

Thanks!

It's people like you that make it work too. But we appreciate the kudos.

Honestly I learnt it as a cheongsam myself. The only way I can see people not learning it like that is by being willfully ignorant about learning what the fuck that chinese dress they like to stare at (especially on Chun-Li) is called.

Same here.

I never even heard/read the word cheongsam until this thread. I learned something.

That seems harsh. I wasn't "willfully ignorant," I just never had any reason to learn the real name.

Now I do.
