I'm seeing people uploading submission with giraffes, tagging them as equines (also).

Just to clear things up for those that weren't aware:
Giraffes are part of the Giraffidae family.
Equines are part of the Equidae family.

They're completely different species. Don't tag giraffes as equines.

We ought to remove equine from the handful of okapi images that have it as well then. What tag should we swap that out with? If Equidae equates to Equine, what's Giraffidae equate to? Giraffine?

The Giraffe's genus is "Giraffa", like a Horse's genus is "Equus"
(The term equine refers to any member of this genus, including any horse.)

I don't think there's a term on the same level as "Equine", for giraffes.

As far as I can tell, the only images that currently have both "giraffe" and "equine" tagged are tagged appropriately.

I'd say leave giraffes tagged as giraffes (and okapis as okapis). Assuming there's an adjective equivalent to "equine" for them, it would be too obscure for e621, in my opinion.

However, I agree that giraffes and okapi are not equines. Equines are horses, onagers, zebra, donkeys, and wild asses, all characterized by a single toe on each foot, making them odd-toed hoofed mammals (AKA perissodactyl ungulates). Giraffes and okapi are both even-toed hoofed mammals (artiodactyl ungulates) in the Family Giraffidae and thus not closely related to horses and their ilk.

I would say that those mistagging giraffes and okapi as "equines" are actually thinking of "hoofed mammals" or "ungulates" but keep getting stuck at the wrong word. It's probably best to just keep an eye out for the mis-tags and simply re-tag as necessary.
