Topic: Your realization of furryness!

Posted under Off Topic

I figured this would pose a good topic for discussion... When did you realise you were a furry and what was it that made you discover it?

Mine came to me at 14 and in art class. A boy in class drew a fox anthro and it literally had me in awe and drooling, so I went home and immediately looked up anthro art on yahoo and spent the next hour and a half looking at the furry art and getting rather turned on in the process lol. Luckily parents didnt get home til later cuz had they seen where my fingers ended up... But I digress lol.

After that I focused on drawing furry art and the likes and have pretty much drawn it since.

I've liked furry characters since the ancient Star Trek cartoon introduced me to M'Ress. (Anyone remember that show? It was awesome. I never liked the original live action series, but the cartoon did some cool stuff.)

I also remember the old Inherit the Earth game was iconic for me, since it led me to playing the Furry Pirates tabletop RPG. Which had a terrible ruleset, but was fun despite it.

When I was young, the only thing on tv most of the day was Looney Tunes, so, yeah.

Really? No one's going to mention the good old Disney's Robin Hood? That wasn't what made me realize I was a furry fan, but I'm sure it helped me along the road to becoming.

When I hit puberty, I was reading Nintendo Power and they were running the Star Fox comic with Fara Phoenix. So that was that.

Ah, copied from Red Rusker's journal? Haha it's k.
For me, I just loved furries my whole life- I just never realized it until last year. I've always, like, freggin idolized animals, and stumbled across some of h0rs3's work, which brought me here, which brought me to furaffinity, which made me a furry!

I remember seeing Disney's Robin Hood in about 1988 and stumbled upon Yerf in about 1996 and from there i discovered the furry fandom and such.

Found a video on pornhub showcasing Jeremy Bernal and Dr Comet art set to that nothing but mammals song by the Bloodhound Gang around 5 years ago. Had no idea how to search for more until I stumbled across the word yif in the end credits. I was about 21. The rest is history.

Early stages of attraction occurred during the mid to late 90's: Looney Tunes was a major influence, punctuated by Lola Bunny in Space Jam. Characters like Callie Briggs and Minerva Mink contributed.

My interest peaked between Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Adventures (Kat and Krystal, respectively).

At that point I had yet to discover the furry community. Doing so in 2004 more or less killed my interest in the subject.

A few years later I stumble upon e621 through a link on Gelbooru. Since then I've regained some appreciation for furry art.

Some.

I have no idea when it all started, but I think werewolves may have been a catalyst. I can say I'm part of the fandom, but I don't draw and those suits are quite expensive. I pretty much keep it part of my private life. Only my brother knows.

I discovered transfur.com in 2008 I think, and from there I discovered artists such as catmonkshiro, blackrat, and my first favorite, Edmol of Japan. Since the discovery, I've developed a "fursona" and have commissioned several pieces illustrating my character.

I just came here hoping to learn about the dangers of MSG, and whups. Here I am.

No, but really. I came across a hentai archive site at the end of middle school (before the joy of boorus and their tagging systems, where everything was just jumbled in "galleries"). They had a bunch of furry galleries. There were some images of Bernal's Gunbunny, or whatever her name is. I was hooked.

Mine was at age 14, it was happy tree friends that turned me, its also what lead me to the e621

Updated by anonymous

Latter part of my high school sophomore year. From le internet, kinda had a thing for the sonic characters, particularly Amy.... ehhhh yeah. Then, I found e621, post #32279, and fapped for the first time to a pic from the internet. Yeah, I did have my sexuality and I did fap, but I guess I was never fond of porn, at least until I found something that had that extra "personal appeal", a fetish.

This might sound stupid on a site like this, but I don't consider myself a furry at all.

Yes, I enjoy looking at art (both regular and pornographic) of furry characters, but does this make me a furry? I guess the answer to that will be different depending on who you ask, but for me the it's a straight "no, it doesn't". In real life, I am attracted to humans only. I do not enjoy furry art more than regular art for whatever reason, nor do I find it more enjoyable to get off on furry smut than on regular smut. I am not attracted to animals or animal features in any way, I do not feel 'connected' to animals in any way (no "I am really a wolf on the inside" nonsense for me), I feel I have little to no common ground with most of the furry fandom (apart from the obvious), I have never self-identified with a "fursona" in any way, etc etc etc.

People like furry art for a lot of different reasons, just as other people dislike furry art for a lot of different reasons. In my opinion, one doesn't need to be a furry in order to enjoy furry artwork.

You're still a furry. I think most people would define a furry as anyone who knocks their rocks off on pornographic furry art, which you have just stated you do. And as null pointed out you're an active member of the furry community even if it is mostly in an out of sight and passive capacity.

Not to come off as a dick but you're self contradicting here.
"I am not attracted to... ...animal features in any way" "I enjoy looking at art (both regular and pornographic) of furry characters" so clearly you are attracted to animalistic features on these characters, even if you are not attracted to them more than regular human features.

I think your problem is that the definition of furry you've set in your mind (perhaps unconsciously to prevent yourself from being classified as one) is way too narrow.
How many people do you see in this very discussion you're participating in saying
"I was always a wolf spiritually" no, most just discovered the art and liked it/found it sexy like yourself. Anything that came later like the development of a fursona etc. is just extra.

Updated by anonymous

There are varying levels of how "furry" an individual can be, from the hardcore furry to the closet furry. General perception and classification of this could be a plethora of subjects: how much you like the concept of "furry" and its community, how much you like animal characteristics, how much you imagine yourself as an animal or furry, how much you are spiritually connected to an animal, or simply how much you like furry art, in Wahai's case.

Each person will have different views of the style and definition of the furry world and of their attitude towards it. Some people think that they are natural furs, while others think they could stop being a furry if they wanted. Some will participate or even contribute to the fandom and some will observe and spectate. Again, its all up to personal opinion and sometimes action.

I honestly can't remember the specifics of my "conversion to the furry." I do remember that it had to do with an extended discovery of the fandom, with research leading to various websites, some of which had pornographic material, which satisfied me. I guess for me furry art/porn is another way of me seeing the personified acts in artwork without actually seeing the human factor.

Plus, tails are pretty freakin awesome...

As I said, the answer will depend on the person giving it, I simply gave my own view. As far as I know, there's no one set-in-stone definition of what makes a person a furry, so it mostly comes down to opinions and personal interpretations of the term anyway. As for me, all I said is that I don't consider myself a furry. I don't identify with the term at all, or what -admittedly in my own mind- it represents. To me, it comes down to the idea that in my opinion furry art isn't especially attractive over other art. If I like chicks in leather and would gladly look at pictures of then or even fap to them, but don't find them more attractive than chicks not wearing leather, I wouldn't call myself a leather fetishist. In a different example, I have many friends who play video games, but most of them would never call themselves gamers (and believe me, these aren't people who shun the term in fear of looking too geeky). It's just a matter of perspective.

And as for the community thing, I don't think it's impossible to be (semi-)active in a community without feeling an explicit part of that community. If I can be a member of a music forum without being a musician, a regular at 4chan without being a racist pedophile, and a Reddit contributor without being an attention whoring child, I'd like to think I can be a member of e621 without being a furry.

Of course, I realise that some people would still call me a furry by their own definitions, or would say I'm just "in the closet". That's fine by me, if I had any serious objections to that I wouldn't be here. All I'm saying is I don't consider myself a furry.

It sort of bugs me when someone is attracted to the concept of anthropomorphized animals (sexually or otherwise) and refuses to describe themselves as "furry."

That's like eating pepperoni pizza every day while claiming that you hate pork.

That's a rather silly comparison. I never claimed to hate or even dislike anything, I just said I don't call myself a furry.

It's less "eating pepperoni pizza every day while claiming that you hate pork" than it is "eating pepperoni pizza every now and then while claiming that you aren't Italian" Pizza might be Italian food, but saying that eating it automatically means you're Italian is nonsense.

Well, at least you didn't lose half of your face and have it replaced with a large strip of tin.

You'd think after going to the Citadel and doing that huge favor involving the sniping and that traitor, that there'd be a little more time for chit-chat. But then again, I guess calibrations are important. Never know when a giant sentient dreadnought will pop out of a relay and cause trouble for the rest of us little people.

Then again I DID just destroy a giant Terminator by shooting it multiple times so calibrations might not be so important. But still crucial.
