Topic: The MTF Tag

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

mtf is defined in the wiki as follows:

MtF is an acronym abbreviation of Male to Female Transgendered. An individual who is MtF is (for tagging purposes) a character which was initially physically male but has undergone surgery, hormone therapy, magic or what-have-you to become partially or fully female.

This tag is primarily used for dickgirls who have backstory indicating they were originally males.

The last line is of note, because it would imply that this tag would go against the Tag What You See rule, meaning that it's use is primarily contingent on outside information. In addition, I see it used mostly on dickgirl images:

and sometimes on transformation images:

(and all child posts related to the above image)

My question is this: What is the appropriate usage of this tag, considering the wiki's description flies in the face of the TWYS rule? The definition of the tag doesn't fit dickgirl; it's requiring outside information (a character bio, backstory, etc.). It doesn't fit a transformation (that should just be labeled transformation, imo).

What should we do with this tag?

It should only be used for gender transformation images and images which clearly depict (perhaps through dialog) a transgendered individual.

Okay. I went through the mtf tagged images and removed it from those that weren't specifically showing transformation, or had dialog specifically stating that it was happening in the picture.

Coincidentally, I removed and replaced with {{mtf} (where applicable):

male_to_female from the 25~ images that had it.

sex_change from the 10~ images that had it.

tg from the 10~ images that had it.

gender_tf still has 31 images associated with it, that I didn't have time to change around.

Maybe alias the above tags to mtf?

Well, I wouldn't say that all of the above tags are synonymous with mtf.

For the sake of immediate understandability, I'm generally against using acronyms that aren't widely known as tags. Following that thinking, expanding mtf and ftm to their full names might be a good way to go:

I also think that the sex_change tag is more descriptive than the gender_tf tag and less wordy than the expanded gender_transformation tag, so I'd like to see it become the standard tag for all gender transformation sequences:

Lastly, I think tg stands for transgender, which would be something else entirely (I think).

Transgender is defined in the wiki as:

General: transgender
Related to or inspired by real-life transgender/transsexuality.

Related tags
mtf
ftm
mastectomy
The following tags are aliased to this tag: genderqueer

The following tags are implicated to this tag: ftm, mtf

Personally, I think sex_change should be used solely for those pictures that either explicitly show, or expressly state (through text), that the character involved is either in the immediate process of a surgical change in sex, or is going through hormone therapy to initiate the sex change. mtf is being used (appropriately) for a transformation sequence, which is not always the same thing as a medical sex change. I simply removed it from the tags that had it because it didn't fit the criteria I outlined above; I have no problem with it being used in that context, however.

gender_tf is, in my opinion, synonymous with mtf when mtf is being used in the wiki-specified way, ie: a transformation from male to female.

tg does stand for transgender, and as there was only a few posts with that tag added, I opted to remove it from those rather than the 226 posts with transgender.

I don't expressly have a problem with changing mtf to male_to_female, so long as it's a unanimous decision supported by the admins.

Okay I agree with this

hmm, I don't consider someone changing their gender the same as gender transformation, so let's just have gender_tf -> gender_transformation (alias) and then gender_transformation -> sex_change (implication)
Perhaps we can have sex_change an umbrella term

Nope, someone changing genders isn't always transformation, such as in the case of dialogue

Agreed

Lastly, I think tg stands for transgender, which would be something else entirely (I think).

Maybe we can condense it into another tag, ideas?
