As far as I can guess, nowadays gay is associated only with men

Lol, gay has multiple meanings, but the main one is representing a male homosexual. It's a none ofencive word for them, unlike fag, faggot, and others. Yes you can here somewhere the word such as gay women but mostly it's just lesbian.

Gay means homosexual, whether they're female or male but it's up to you how you use it. It's not offensive as far as I know, that's the main thing.

Now a days, it tend to lean towards, gay = male, while, lesbian = female.

I guess it's more descriptive but, meh, who cares?

I wondered the same thing for a while. While lesbians really are just women who are gay, they get a special title. It's how gay women were identified from gay men, or something of the sort, and the tradition has stuck to the present. As a result, a great majority of stuff labeled gay refers primarily to homosexual males, as females are almost always referred to as lesbians. I suspect that part of this has to do with the fact that homosexual men don't really have a term to describe them that is not offensive, unlike women, so they are much more prevalent in gay content.
