"Technically, this tag applies to any image whose filetype is .gif, though in practice it is usually only applied to animated images, as .gif is the only image type that currently supports animation."

It's 1301 images, maybe someone should check them out first.

people tag gif on animated pictures. using that tag for non-animated pictures would be the same as me tagging an image with jpeg. not really much of a point.

Considering we can search by file extension now (type:gif), I don't think the gif tag is required anymore. You could have searched animated -flash to find gifs before anyway.
