God, yes, this. Yes. Cougars can be called mountain *lions* but cougar is way easier to type. and a mountain lion isn't a damn lion.

Cougars, Mountain Lions, Pumas, and Panthers are all technically the same species; the only real differences are what location each name is generally used in and minor variances in fur color and pattern.
Lions, on the other hand, are an entirely difference species only native to Africa and nearby areas.

Partly true. :) Cougars, mountain lions, and Puma are all the same thing. (and of course there are several subspecies of cougar, generally split up by geological region) The Florida panther is another subspecies (probably the best known because it's endangered)...
However the creature commonly referred to as 'panther'--and is what the tag pantherrefers to--is a large black cat. Just like white tigers are tigers of a different color, panthers are either leopards, or jaguars who are born with black colored coats instead. There are also black margay and black ocelot, though those are much smaller creatures (40lbs, versus the 200 of a leopard/jaguar or the 150 or so for a cougar). The general biologist consensus is that black cougars, though, don't exist
