The reason religious people are more likely to be homophobes is because there is a whole personality suite that tends to be more conservatively minded and is prone to religious behavior, but this personality is also more susceptible to the emotion of disgust, which heightens their sensitivity to homosexual behavior.

It isn't that they're homophobes because their religious, it's because their religious because they're easily upset by deviant social behaviors.
